First there was fire, then there was a lingering smell of fish, and now there’s a swarm of flies.
East Londoners have had a bit of a rough summer after a fish factory set on fire.
For the last few months they’ve had to cope with a pretty horrific smell of rotting fish after a fire at Shapla Frozen Foods.
But then the smell started attracting flies and neighbours aren’t happy.
Kay Knight, 71, who lives 200 yards from the building, said: ‘We just can’t go outside to enjoy the summer since all of this has happened.
‘We tried to have a barbecue, but we were covered in flies. It’s just been horrible.
‘Some residents have got these flycatchers that are just full of the things and they look disgusting.
‘I haven’t done that, I just bash them with a tea towel whenever they come in the house.’

Health and safety deemed the buildings too unsafe to enter so the £1 million worth of frozen fish and seafood inside the huge factory have been left to rot – creating swarms of flies from millions of maggots.

‘I have never smelt anything so bad,’ added Anita Holtom, 66.
‘My grandchildren usually play outside but even they can’t stand being out there.’
Environmental health officers from Havering Council visited the site last week where they saw the swarms of flies.
The ultimate responsibility to fix the site is with the land owner, who has been handed an abatement notice of 21 days which ends tomorrow.
Director of Shapla, Rachid Salim, has been uncontactable since the fire
