Horrifying! This razor-toothed fish is very real, and it’s come to Britain

Remember when we told you about the terrifying razor-toothed fishthat was falling from the skies in Alaska?

It’s time to get worried, as they’ve just been spotted in UK rivers for the first time in almost 200 years.

The river and sea lampreys existed for 200 million years before the dinosaurs – and are known for their mass of ferocious looking razor sharp teeth.

But while the species are an endangered species Europe, decreased pollution levels has seen their number rise – with a surge in the lamprey population on Yorkshire’s River Derwent.

The large increase is also a result of techniques by the Environment Agency – using cones that enable the fish to swim upstream and return to their original breeding grounds.

Simon Tom, an Environment Agency fisheries expert, said: ‘For the last 200 years, some rivers have not been capable of supporting lamprey species as a result of water quality, poor habitat and manmade barriers.

‘Now that water quality has improved and some of these barriers have been removed we are seeing lampreys return to the upper reaches of rivers such as the Ouse, Trent, and Derwent, where they were absent as recently as 30 years ago.’
