Uduaghan, Jonathan and Dickson
All is set for today’s formal declaration of Bayelsa State Governor, Seriake Dickson for second term in office.
Activities at the headquarters of the “Restoration Campaign Organisation,” the governor’s campaign body, at the Opolo suburb of the state capital were also in top gear as officials said they were ready for the campaign launch.
An official at the campaign office, Samuel Beke, said all arrangements have been concluded to begin a state-wide campaign and expressed confidence that Dickson will be re-elected.
According to him, the thrust of the campaign would be the “great achievements” of the governor and the need for continuity.
Also, the Samson Siasia complex, venue of the governor’s formal declaration was a beehive of activities yesterday as workmen were putting finishing touches to the stands while security operatives were seen combing the arena ostensibly due to the anticipated influx of dignitaries.
A giant bill board of Governor Seriake Dickson was on display at the colourful arena just as several other billboards from support groups were mounted along the road leading to the stadium.
Political heavyweights
The former President, Dr. Goodluck Jonathan, his wife Dame Patience Jonathan, former governor of Bayelsa State, Chief Diepreye Alamieyeseigha, Ijaw elders and other political heavyweights from the South-South geo-political zone are among dignitaries that will attend the event.
It would be first public appearance of the former First Family in the state since they left office in May.
Others expected at the event include, the national leadership of Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), PDP governors and National Assembly members.
“From the look of things, the PDP governors are set to storm Yenagoa in full force. You know Bayelsa State holds a lot of significance for the PDP as a political party.
“It is not just a state to be retained but you will also realize that it is the home state of former President Goodluck Jonathan. So there is so much at stake and they are determined to make the governor’s declaration a show of its own.
“I think the PDP governors want to send out a strong signal of their readiness to keep Bayelsa firmly in the grip of the PDP and as such their presence will be felt on Tuesday in Yenagoa,” a source said.
He said both the former First Lady and her husband were fully behind the re-election of the governor.
Meanwhile, the first elected Governor of Bayelsa State Chief Diepreye Alamieyeseigha, a pillar of support for Dickson has described him as a good product, that will be easy to market for a second tenure in office as Governor of the state.
Dickson, he said, has performed well and deserves a second tenure to consolidate on the gains of the restoration agenda.
“It is only a man like Dickson, who has performed creditably well that can bring victory for the PDP in the December 5 governorship polls,” he said.
