Football: Why the international break has come at a perfect time for Jose Mourinho’s Chelsea

Traditionally the international break has been a point in the season where Jose Mourinho’s Chelsea go to their national sides on a high.

However, this time around there is no warm glow, but the blistering words of the manager ringing in their ears.

Chelsea have started the season poorly, winning just one of their first four games to languish in the bottom half of the table. This comes as closest rivals Manchester City have exploded from the blocks to win all their games in August to set a blistering early pace.

With the momentum in the Premier League not going the way Chelsea fans would have liked, the international break may have come as a relief to players and fans alike.

Since defeat against Crystal Palace, the transfer window has closed and Chelsea and the rest of the Premier League know what they have to work with until January at least.

The international break is an opportunity for Mourinho to look at his squad and work out how to revitalise a side that dominated the league last season. So far a few senior players have not got going, notably Branislav Ivanovic, Gary Cahill and Eden Hazard.

These players will have had the opportunity to have a breather from the pressure of the Premier League and reflect on their form. On their return they will have a few days with Mourinho to plan for a revival.

Getting back on track in the Premier League will mean that key players will need to step up and show the skills that allowed the Blues to romp to the Premier League title last season.

Chelsea have not become a poor team overnight , the season is not won or lost in August and with a short break a change could be as good as a rest.
