‘Okija Shrine: No longer a bee-hive of activities for politicians

•The mystery, fame, fiction

By Vincent Ujumadu

THE SLEEPY community of Okija in Ihiala Local Government Area of Anambra State came into limelight in August, 2004, when the media, both print and electronic, became awash with gory stories of goings-on inside Ogwugwu Akpu, one of the shrines in the area.

okija-shrine

Before then, Ogwugwu Akpu was just like any other shrines in Igbo land which served as checks against impunity and man’s inhumanity to man.

For instance, people who were aggrieved over the manner they were treated in business deals, land disputes, among other issues, took solace in Ogwugwu shrine, which they believed, was capable of delivering justice in favour of the down-trodden.

The existence of Ogwugwu Akpu and others like Ogwugwu Isiula, Ogwugwu Mmili, among others, never affected the spread of Christianity, as Okija, which had produced over 30 Catholic and Anglican priests with about 10 parishes and three archdeaconries, and hosts the country’s first private faith-based university, the Madonna University, is one of the fastest developing communities in Anambra State.

It remained so until the emergence of the present democratic dispensation when politicians began to patronize the shrine during which the so-called political godfathers dragged political office seekers to the shrine to swear oath of allegiance to them if elected into the aspired offices.

South East Voice gathered that in the beginning, the priests of the shrine were very old people who occupied the position because the lot fell on them. They were also not demanding money before administering the oaths, although the visitors could show appreciation if they wished.

Indeed, it was the visit of former Anambra governor, Dr. Chris Ngige to Okija shrine to swear an oath that brought the shrine into popularity. Caged by his political godfathers, Dr. Ngige was reportedly dragged to Okija shrine to swear an oath of allegiance to his polical godfathers to keep his side of agreement to them on winning the election.

Looking back, Ngige in an interview, told a national daily that, “I was a foundation member of the PDP, I was nominated to be a minister by Dr. Alex Ekwueme, but Obasanjo refused because they fought a bitter primary in Jos and I was in Ekwueme’s camp. So I was blacklisted. I was the Assistant National Secretary of the party before I came back to contest the primaries for Senate in 2002/2003.

“Then, I was begged by Chief Audu Ogbeh and others in the National Working Committee, NWC. Even the Ubas came to beg me as a last resort. Before then, members of Better Anambra Movement led by Ben Akabueze, Ben Okoye and Ausbeth Ajagu from Lagos had screened people and rated me first from their interview and CV evaluation.

That they were my benefactors was because it was when they were begging me that I caved in to run. I gave conditions for going to run and the major condition was that I should be able to run the place unfettered and give good governance to my people in Anambra State.

“They were the people, who breached the agreement by asking me to sign money for them; by asking me to allow them to appoint all the commissioners, special assistants, aide de camp, chief security officer and personal assistants. We had no such agreement. They breached that agreement, so I said, ‘okay, if you breach the agreement, then there is no agreement any more.’

“On the way, they noticed some resentment from me that showed that I was no longer happy with the journey. They said they needed loyalty. So, one of them suggested it (Okija) and they now formed themselves into a cabal.

One night they said: “If you don’t go with us to Okija Shrine, we will shoot (you). It’s only a living general that can tell the history of a war. If I was shot dead, the story could have been distorted. I have to be alive to be telling you this story.

okija-shrine

“I asked them: “What should I do?” They said: “Let us go to Okija Shrine and I said, ‘okay, let’s go.’” I took my Bible with me and followed them. When we got there, I noticed they did not have guns; then I said I was not going in.

One of them said he could swear for me, I said, ‘go ahead,’ so he did it for me. But I did not believe in what they were doing because I am a staunch Catholic.

I am a knight of the Catholic Church; so I never listened to what they were saying. They were just fooling themselves.”

The Okija incident was one of the issues that Ngige battled as a governor, eventually leading to his ouster. Besides, Dr. Ngige, other politicians also visited the shrine where they swore oaths of allegiance.

According to a native of Ubahuezike, one of the 30 villages in Okija, where the shrine is located, it was common to see Coaster buses filled with politicians driving into the area at the dead of night to swear oaths.

There was the story that those who were taken to the shrine for the oath–taking ceremony were not told their mission until they saw themselves at the shrine, at which time it was virtually impossible for them to back out.

As this happened, most natives of other 29 villages in the town were not aware of the happenings at Ogwugwu shrine such that it was indeed a strange story to them when the media started reporting developments in the shrine.

As time went on, many young men from Ubahuezike village who were naturally Ogwugwu priests by virtue of their place of birth, decided to exploit it, and turned it into business–making venture.

These young men, most of who were trading in Lagos and other cities, but were finding life difficult, returned home and modernized the operations of Ogwugwu deity. They were to be joined later by some educated people in the area who introduced reforms into the Ogwugwu shrine.

It was these youths that introduced a register of those that patronize Ogwugwu shrine and thereafter, began to charge money from those who patronize the shrine. Later, they introduced a system whereby Ogwugwu agents could travel to any part of the country to deliver summons to those sued at Ogwugwu shrine, and such people were given a date to appear before the shrine in person or be prepared for the dire consequences.

As the Ogwugwu became more popular, the young priests engaged the services of commercial motorcycle operators, who served as their agents.

The Okada riders, who normally use the famous Okija junction as their base, would readily volunteer to take anybody visiting the shrine to his preferred client and by the time they would have completed the about 15 minutes ride, he (the Okada rider) would have convinced the visitor on the most powerful priest to visit.

That was why the commercial motorcycle operators would do anything possible to ensure that they were the ones to carry first time visitors to a priest of Ogwugwu shrine as he is also assured of a commission from the amount paid by the visitor.

It was not clear at what point the operators of the shrine began to demand for the corpses of those allegedly killed by Ogwugwu, but it became a common knowledge that once somebody suspected to have been killed by Ogwugwu was buried in his compound, the priests of the deity would go to demand for the corpse the same day it was buried and the body would be exhumed and taken to the Ogwugwu forest and kept for ever.

The frightening sight is usually shown to those, who appear before the deity after they were summoned and this further instils more fear on such people, with the result that they would do the bidding of the priests to stay alive.

With the soaring popularity of Ogwugwu Akpu, the young men, who became full time priests suddenly had their lifestyles changed as they began to acquire expensive cars and started building mansions in the area.

Then, the bubble burst as infighting began among them, leading to the people exposing one another on the level of their involvement in what was beginning to dawn on outsiders that it was indeed ‘business’ and nothing more.

In August 2004, a petition was written to the then Inspector General of Police, Mr. Tafa Balogun over the happenings at Okija and the IGP ordered the then state police commissioner, Mr. Felix Ogbaudu, to investigate.

The disagreement among the operators later led to the arrest of two chief priests and 30 other persons suspected to be agents of Ogwugwu shrine by the police, who were taken to Abuja for questioning.

The police also found 10 registers containing names of prominent politicians, businessmen, apprentices, among others, from most parts of Igbo land and beyond, though the identities of those whose names were in the register had not been made public till date

One of the current chief priests of Ogwugwu said that it was the media that blew the happenings at the deity out of proportion. He said: “This deity is not associated with killing people, rituals or any form of death. Instead, the shrine’s main objective is to settle differences amicably and, should such move fail to resolve the crisis, the ultimate punishment is meted.

“The shrine seeks to create solution to problems, especially for people who have been cheated in one way or the other. For instance, if someone is owing you and refuses to pay, or your land or property is forcefully taken from you, you can come to the shrine and state your case and the shrine will help in getting a settlement for you peacefully if the other party obeys our summons.”

According to him, even white men visit the shrine to summon their Nigerian business partners who they claim, cheated them in business.

After the police raid of the shrine in 2004, it was as if the popularity of the shrine had waned, although recent happenings indicate that some people still believe in it, especially non-indigenes of Okija.

For instance, it was reported recently that a Reverend Father, Wence Madu, who is the Rector of the Imo State Polytechnic, was summoned to the Ogwugwu shrine. According to the report, the cleric received an invitation asking him to undo an alleged injustice he was accused of committing or appear at the shrine to prove his innocence.

Similarly, a female federal civil servant complained recently that her husband’s brothers summoned him to Okija shrine over their late father’s landed property. However, being a highly religious person, she discouraged her husband from going to Okija as that would mean exposing him to danger.

Also, a 28-year-old motor mechanic in Nnewi, Mr. Ifeanyi Ujah, was recently summoned to Ogwugwu for merely being a go-between in a car purchasing deal. He, however, reported the matter to his priest who, after prayers, urged him to ignore the summons.

As at today, Okija shrine has lost the glory it acquired through politicians who patronised it in the past. A source told South East Voice: “Those days are gone. The politicians do not come any more. It was the Ngige issue that caused the commotion of the past and the media hyped it.”

Boy born with three penises has operation to correct the problem

The boy (not pictured) will be able to have sex and start a family when he is older (Picture: Getty Images)

A boy who was born with three penises has had an operation to remove the extra appendages.

Doctors described the two-year-old’s extra penises as ‘soft, bony’ masses, and in doing the operation they also discovered he had no anus.

He is only able to pass urine though one of the penises, however following the operation doctors say the boy will grow up with a functioning penis and will be able to have sex and have children.

The boy, from India, is thought to suffer from diphallia – a condition which causes males to be born with more than one penis.

Doctors rectified the boy’s abnormality by removing one penis and then fusing two of the remaining appendages into one which can be used normally.

Dr Vishesh Dixit, a paediatric surgeon at Sion hospital, said: ‘The two functional penises were fused into one, by wrapping a mass of skin around them.’

While carrying out the operation in Uttar Pradesh’s Sion hospital, surgeons also performed a colostomy to allow him to pass excrement properly.

The boy’s uncle told DNA India: ‘We want our boy to lead a normal life, and are grateful to the doctors who have conducted a successful surgery.’

Diphallia is extremely rare, with only 100 cases being found in medical literature dating back as far as 1609.

Nigeria to cut senators, reps’ jumbo pay as Buhari fumes

Following President Muhammadu Buhari’s order directing the Revenue Mobilisation, Allocation and Fiscal Commission (RMAFC) to address public outcry over huge salaries and allowances of members of the National Assembly, the chairman of the commission, Elias Mbam, said on Tuesday that Senators and members of the House of Representatives will earn less than N1 million by the end of next month.

Speaking at the State House after Mr. Mbam made presentation on the activities and challenges of the commission, President Buhari chided the RMAFC for approving excessive remunerations for some political office holders, and urged the commission to seek a proper interpretation of its powers and address the public outcry against the unreasonably high payments.

President Buhari also warned that severe sanctions will be visited on any individual or organisation that violates the directive on the payment of all national revenue into the Federation Account.

President Buhari spoke a week after PREMIUM TIMES published details of the federal lawmakers’ salaries and allowances, a publication that sparked widespread public anger against the lawmakers, with many calling a drastic cut.

But in his response to reporters’ questions after meeting the president, the RMAFC boss said the commission had been working on the review of the salaries and allowances of the political office holders at National Assembly, the State Assemblies and Local Governments, adding that the review also covers the Judiciary.

Mr. Mbam said the review, which according to him is still going through a process and expected to be ready by next month, is expected to reflect the economic realities of the day occasioned by the drop in oil prices.

“We are currently reviewing the subsisting remuneration packages and it is going to reflect the socio-economic realities of today. We expect that before the end of next month, it will be ready. But it will go through a process, it is not something that you will just say yes or no,” he said.

According to Mr. Mbam, “no member of the National Assembly should earn up to N1million per month” and that the Senators and Members of the House of Representatives have no option but to abide by the commission’s new wage formula.

“They do not have a choice. We are guided by the constitution and we are going to be guided by such laws that are provided for in the constitution and the oath they swore to obey,” he said.

According to him, President Buhari advised that they use all legitimate means to ensure that all public office holders’ emoluments comply with those approved by the commission and “ensure that leakages are blocked.”

As part of the challenges faced by the commission, Mr. Mbam said the commission was not properly funded as it should be one of the agencies of government that should have financial autonomy.

“The best way to do that is to include it as one of the agencies that will benefit from first line charge,” he said.

The second challenge, he said is lack of power of enforcement. He therefore demanded a review of the Act establishing the commission so that it can have power of enforcement and sanctions on any of the defaulting MDAs.

Mr. Mbam said the review of of salaries and allowances had been on since last year, noting that it had become imperative to conclude it following the drop in oil prices and the financial constraint which had degenerated to states been unable to pay salaries of staff.

“These are some of the issues that made the review necessary. It did not start with this administration, we started the review as far back as last year. It is not because of the present administration that we commenced it,” he said.

The RMAFC is saddled with the responsibility of determining the remuneration for political office holders, both elected and appointed, from the national level to the local government level.

The pay packages of public office holders, particularly the salaries and allowances of the National Assembly members, have been an issue of serious concern among Nigerians.

Since 2010, the N150 billion annual allocations to the National Assembly in the budget, which includes the salaries and allowances as well as other perks, have remained a closely guarded secret, as their details have always been hidden from the public.

PREMIUM TIMES had on August 18 published a report indicating that the 360 members of the House of Representatives gulp N6.58 billion from the nation’s treasury in annual salaries and allowances, while the 109 Senators cost the nation N2.14 billion in similar emoluments.

Cumulatively, the country shells out a hefty N8.72 billion every year in salaries and allowances to lawmakers in the two chambers of the National Assembly.

However, the amount the Senators and Members of the House of Representatives remit as tax appears insignificant as their income tax is calculated as a function of their basic salaries alone.

Yet the allowances, which are non-taxed are about 870 percent (Senators) and 820 percent (Reps) of their basic salaries.

PREMIUM TIMES analyses of the lawmakers’ pay did however not include the illegal but hefty quarterly allowances lawmakers pay themselves – they call it office running cost.

The infographics below give graphic analyses of the lawmakers’ salaries and allowances:

British man accused of rape is freed after CCTV footage comes out

A British man in Cambodia who was accused of rape has been cleared thanks to ‘overwhelming’ evidence found in CCTV footage.

The CCTV recording showed that his alleged victim – a 22-year-old backpacker – had in fact fallen on the way back to the bar, resulting in injuries to her wrist and back.

Nick Laycock, 25, spent two days in a prison cell after he was arrested at a guest house where he works – but prosecutors have now decided not to press charges.

It had been alleged that he raped a 22-year-old backpacker who he went for a walk with by a nearby river because she returned to her friends with wrist and back injuries after having sex with him.

Going on the statements of her two companions, who said they ‘believed’ the girl had been sexually assaulted, Nick, from Berkshire, was detained by police on Sunday.

However, guesthouse owner Joel Miles carried out his own investigations on his CCTV recordings – and saw that the pair had consensual sex but that the girl had fallen over on her way back to the bar, resulting in her injuries.

When Nick showed up at court in Kampot yesterday he was told by prosecutors that they would not be pressing charges after they had studied the CCTV footage.

He is said to be ‘greatly relieved’ by the outcome and when he arrived back at the Arcadia guesthouse tourists and colleagues congratulated him.

According to the Mail Online, Nick said: ‘It was a traumatic experience.

‘I didn’t know what was going to happen to me.

‘A small misunderstanding and it resulted in me going to jail. Two days was bad enough.’

He is also said to be ‘furious’ with the British Embassy, who apparently offered no consular assistance.

A rape sentence in Cambodia can be up to 20 years.

Dead teenager 'wakes up in grave in Honduras' – only to then 'die in hospital'

Sixteen-year-old Neysi Perez was buried after doctors pronounced she was dead - but her family insist she was buried alive. Despite their best efforts, the teenager died

A teenage girl in Honduras had mistakenly been buried alive and apparently woke up in her coffin, only to die before she was freed.

Footage shows frantic relatives smashing into the concrete tomb of recently buried Neysi Perez, 16, after they said they heard her screaming from inside. She had been buried the previous day.

When they opened the coffin, Perez was dead. But according to relatives, she was still warm and had bruises on her fingertips. The glass viewing pane on her coffin had been smashed.

"As I put my hand on her grave, I could hear noises inside," her husband, Rudy Gonzales told Primer Impacto TV news. "I heard banging, then I heard her voice. She was screaming for help."

Perez, 16, had been three months pregnant, and apparently fell unconscious when she heard a burst of gunfire near her home in La Entrada, western Honduras.

When she began foaming at the mouth, her parents – who thought she was possessed by an evil spirit – called a local priest who attempted to perform an exorcism.

Perez was rushed to hospital when she became lifeless and was soon pronounced dead by doctors three hours later. She was buried wearing her wedding dress.

Mr Gonzales was visiting his wife’s grave 24 hours after her funeral, when he says heard screaming coming from inside the tomb.

By the time relatives and cemetery workers were able to break through the concrete and transport Perez, still in her coffin, to the hospital, it was too late. Medics again pronounced her dead.

Doctors believe that Perez suffered a severe panic attack brought on by the gunfire, which temporarily stopped her heart. They said that it is also possible that she had a cataplexy attack, which is an abrupt loss of voluntary muscle function triggered by extreme stress.

Maria Gutierrez, Perez’s mother, believed her daughter was buried alive, and blamed doctors for being too quick in signing a death certificate. "She didn’t look like she had died," Ms Gutierrez said.

Perez was later reburied in her original grave.

Kenyans to Get Five Years U.S. Visa From September

By Oliver Mathenge

A deal struck by President Uhuru Kenyatta and President Barack Obama in July to increase validity of visa will kick off at the end of the September.

In an announcement made on Thursday, the US Embasssy in Nairobi said this increased validity will cover tourist business and student visas.

"The United States and the Republic of Kenya are scheduled to jointly increase the validity of short-term business/tourist visas and student visas issued to each other's citizens on September 22, 2015," the announcement said.

This means Kenyan applicants who qualify for non-immigrant visa will be eligible to receive a multiple-entry visa for up to five years for business and tourist travel.

Qualified Kenyan students and their dependents who qualify for a student visa will be eligible for a multiple-entry student visa valid for up to five years or the length of their program.

"U.S. citizens eligible for Kenyan short-term business and tourist visas or student visas will be afforded the same benefit. Changes in visa validity will not affect visa eligibility criteria. Visa applicants will be subject to the same standards of eligibility for a U.S. visa as before the change in validity," the statement by the embassy said.

While in Nairobi on July 25, Obama announced that they had agreed with Uhuru to ease the visa validity between the two countries.

"We will extend student and business visas for up to five years for Kenyans travelling to the United States and for Americans travelling to Kenya. This will make it easier for students to complete their studies and for businesses to make long-term plans," Obama said during a joint press briefing with Uhuru at State House in Nairobi.

However, Kenyans will pay an extra US$40 (Sh4,000) as a "reciprocity fee" above the normal fees, if their extended visa application is approved.

The extended validity for visas is one of the ways that the US and Kenya are seeking to help enhance trade between the two countries.

"The reciprocal extension of visa validity to five years underscores the commitment of both the United States and the Republic of Kenya to promote bilateral trade and tourism, increase opportunities for people-to-people engagement, and enhance mutual understanding between our countries," the US embassy announcement said.

This new arrangement will be more convenient and less costly for travellers.

Currently, Kenyan business travellers and tourists must apply annually if visiting the United States each year but they will now only need to apply to renew their visa once every five years.

Currently, Kenyan students who depart the US for short visits abroad are required to apply for new visas but will now use the same visa as long as they remain full-time students in good standing.

Change Agenda: We are building a new Nigeria says Buhari

President Muhammadu Buhari has said that his administration is building a new Nigeria and that the effort requires the support and participation of its citizens both at home and abroad.

Buhari

The President said this on Tuesday at the Diaspora Day 2015 celebration with the theme “Diaspora and Nigeria Change Agenda“, held at the Banquet Hall of the Presidential Villa, Abuja.

Buhari, who was represented by the Vice President, Prof. Yemi Osinbajo (SAN), said that Nigerians in the Diaspora had a lot of contributions to make in rebuilding the country.

“Permit me to take this opportunity to interrogate the place and role of Nigerians abroad in the Change Agenda of the Buhari administration.

“This is because we have embarked on the building of a bold new Nigeria and we need all hands on deck.

“The time has come for talents from home and abroad to mix it up in patriotic zeal to fashion the Nigeria of our dreams.

“First let me quickly lay out our medium to long term strategy as a government.

“It is namely to build an economy led by a strong and responsible private sector.“

Buhari said that government would intervene by providing physical and economic infrastructure as well as social policies that would provide opportunities and succour for the 110 million extremely poor Nigerians.

He said that the administration was aiming to consistently generate 5,000 MW of power daily by early 2016.

According to him, this is a modest target from what is already available.

He said efforts were being intensified to complete a variety of outstanding power-related projects to remove existing pitfalls and lay the foundation for the generation of 10,000MW and 15,000MW in the short and long terms.

Buhari said that government was pursuing a long overdue reform in the hydrocarbon industry and was reorganising the NNPC and holding the officials accountable for past revenue losses.

He said government would improve the capacity of the country’s oil refineries to reduce the over 37 per cent of foreign exchange applied to the importation of refined petroleum products.

The President said that in a bid to ensure self-sustenance, government was making concerted efforts to boost the production of rice, wheat, and cotton.

According to him, the production of the rice, wheat, and cotton will help reduce the foreign exchange requirement for the importation of the same items as rice importation alone gulps about $4 billion annually.

He added that seven rice-producing states were working in concert with the Federal Government to map out the pathway to self-sustenance in rice production within 30 months.

Buhari said that the agricultural and agro-allied value chain remained a priority of government in job creation plans as it would support local agriculture.

He said that plans were on to create a friendly and efficient environment for investments by removing bureaucracies and red tapes in approval processes adding that the incentive regime in the country would also be reviewed.
He said government intended to return all garment and textile factories to full production within the shortest time possible.

The President said that to address youth unemployment government would invest in infrastructure, technology, agriculture and mining while the one-meal-a-day programme for primary schools would also create many jobs and business opportunities.

He said government would implement social intervention schemes to make no fewer than 110 million extremely poor Nigerians to participate in the new Nigeria.

He said that the experience and exposure of Nigerians abroad would be tapped to build a thriving economy as obtained in other nations, adding that India, Japan, China and Korea attained global status following the contributions of their nationals abroad.

“Besides, the financial remittances from Nigerians abroad have well reached an estimate of over $20 billion in 2014.

“With the potential of such huge populations abroad and attendant financial muscle, no government can actually totally ignore such persons,“ he said

He added that the place to start was to develop a reliable data of Nigerian citizens abroad using the Embassies and missions.

The President said that if signed into law, the proposed Diaspora Commission would open a new vista for engaging Nigerians abroad and allowing their expertise to permeate the entire country.

He said that government was aware of the importance of the voting rights of Nigerians broad, noting that Nigeria would consider absentee voting in the future.

He, however, said that legislation, funding, and confidence in the electoral system were required to make it work.

According to him, the last general elections have instilled confidence in the electoral process.

“Our electoral process is evolving and as greater confidence is built in the institutions and processes associated with it we may then create voting opportunities for our citizens abroad in the not too distant future,“ he added.

He affirmed that government would ensure that the rights of Nigerian citizens abroad were protected while urging them to be good ambassadors of the country.

The Way of the Eagle, the Lion and the King, By Femi Fani-Kayode

Permit me to begin this week’s column with a small aside. One of the things that I learnt from my late father, Chief Remilekun Fani-Kayode and my leader, President Olusegun Obasanjo, is that one must never respond to the ignorant, the uncouth, the uncultured, the unlettered, the unrefined and the accursed.

They also taught us never to join issues with the embittered, the obsessed, the scorned in love, the imbecilic, the foolish, the living-dead and those who are emotionally, psychologically and intellectually challenged. Rather than a response, such sad and sorry souls are deserving only of our prayers and our pity.

It is in this context and through this prism that I view those who have of late taken pleasure in peddling the most shameful, disgusting and reprehensible type of falsehood about me and mine. Joining issues with such vermin is far below me. I do not have the time for it and I refuse to wallow in the pigsty with them. Instead I leave them to God and I pray that He visits His judgement upon them at the soonest.

The fact of the matter is that their end has already been determined. They are like the stubborn fly that insists on following the corpse into the grave – the stench of death stalks them and they shall eat the bread of sorrows. Now let us get back to today’s topic which is titled “The Way Of The Eagle, The Lion and The King.”

Eagles do not hide when they see a storm gathering, lions do not retreat when the enemy threatens and kings do not run when they hear the sound of battle. Rather the eagle flies boldly into the eye of the storm without a trace of fear but with power, majesty, grace and passion. The lion rises and roars with courage and strength as his adversary approaches.

The king does not yield one inch of the field to the enemy but rather he boldly leads his captains and princes into the thick of the battle. This surely is our calling and the essence of our lives. The Lord has given us the spirit of the eagle and the lion: the spirit of the warrior and the king. We cannot and will not be intimidated by anything, any circumstance or anyone and least of all by what we see, feel or hear.

And why should we be afraid of mere mortals, for what is man? The Bible asks,”who art thou o man?” It then answers its own question by saying “thou art as the grass that withers, thou art as the flower that fadeth…a man that is born of woman, that is today and tomorrow is no more.” Indeed that is all we are before God – withering flowers and fading grass that will one day come to an end. His word says it is He alone that has the power to “give life and to kill.” If we die tomorrow it is by His will and if we live tomorrow it is by His grace.

We must therefore humble ourselves before God and know that He alone rules in the affairs of men and determines the destiny of nations. We must fear God alone and we must strive to be the man (or woman) that He has called us to be – a prince of Heaven, a deliverer of his people, a fearless warrior and a worthy king. One of the characteristics of such a leader and king is the courage and ability to fearlessly rise up to the occasion and speak out when faced with evil, injustice and oppression. This can hardly be disputed.

Yet some people still have their reservations and often ask the following questions – “why should we speak out? Why should we bother? What difference will it make? Why should we risk our lives? Why should we swim against the tide? Why should we bother fighting against the government or the authorities because we can never win?” These are deep and difficult questions but thankfully Dante Alighieri provided the answer to some of them when he wrote that “the hottest place in hell is reserved for those that remain neutral in times of great moral crisis.”

This is not only true but it is also deeply profound. There is no gainsaying that when good men remain silent, evil thrives in the land. That is why it saddens me when some people suggest that we should not talk about our challenges and that we should not speak out and protest against the evil and injustice that thrives in our land. Imagine what it would have been like if people had adopted that attitude all over the world and throughout the ages. What a disaster it would have been for us all. A few examples will suffice.

If people did not speak out and protest, we would still have had slavery all over the world today. If people did not speak out and protest, we would not have had democracy in the world today. If people did not speak out and protest, fascism and Hitler’s Nazis would have been alive and well today and the Aryan race would have been ruling the world with an iron fist.

If people did not speak out and protest, we would still have had the evil of communism in the Soviet Union and Eastern Europe today and worse still the communists may well have been controlling most of our planet by now. If people did not speak out and protest, a black man would not be the President of the United States of America today.

If people did not speak out and protest, every country in Africa would still be a grovelling colony today. If people did not speak out and protest, apartheid and the Boers would still have been enthroned and in power in South Africa today. If people did not speak out and protest, ISIS, Al Qaeda, the Taliban, Al Shabab and Boko Haram would have taken over half of the world by today.

If people did not speak out and protest, there would have been no State of Israel or Jewish homeland today. If people did not speak out and protest, Iran would have possessed and would most likely have used nuclear weapons and other weapons of mass destruction by today.

If people did not speak out and protest, vicious military dictatorships and unaccountable military tyrants would still have been ruling most of Africa today.

If people didn’t speak out and protest, the great monotheist faiths of Christianity, Islam and Judaism would never have been established and the world would still have been controlled by pagans, cannibals, cultists and devil worshipers till today.

If people did not speak out and protest, there would not have been a separation of power between the church and the state till today. If people did not speak out and protest, there would have been no freedom of worship today and neither would there have been any freedom of speech, freedom of expression, freedom to share information or freedom to communicate: there would have been no civil liberties, no human rights, no right to vote and no equality of the sexes in the world till today.

If people did not speak out and protest, the United States of America would never have been founded and established as an independent nation state and she could never have become the great and powerful country that she is today.

If people did not speak out and protest, Great Britain, France, Russia and indeed the whole of Europe would still be ruled by a handful of autocratic and indolent royal families till today. If people did not speak out and protest, Africa would still be in the dark ages till today and we would still have been drowning twins at birth and selling one another into slavery. I could go on and on.

The point is that we must speak out strongly and protest against injustice and evil whenever and wherever we see it. That is why we were educated in the first place and that is what being a believer or a man or woman of faith is all about.

Dissenting, protesting and standing up for the rights of the weakest and most vulnerable in our society, even at the risk of death or our liberty, is the lifeblood of any decent and civilised community. As Martin Luther King once said, “if we are not ready to die for something then we are not fit to live for anything.” Speaking out against injustice and vigorously opposing the abuse of power, wickedness in high places, governmental incompetence, tyranny and evil is the greatest duty that we have to posterity and to one another as human beings.

It is a sacred duty – a trust and obligation before the Living God who has explicitly commanded us in His Holy Word to “resist evil” and to “fight injustice.” The minute we stop talking, we stop protesting and we stop speaking out against that which is unjust and evil, that is when we are truly lost as a people. That is when we cease to be the men and women that God has ordained us to be. That is when we no longer deserve to be called human beings. That is when we must bow our heads in shame forever.

Cyclist records moment she was pushed off bike into traffic

Police want to speak to this man (Picture: PA)

Police are looking for this man after he apparently pushed a cyclist off her bike and into oncoming traffic.

The woman, in her 40s, asked the man not to knock her off and he can be heard saying ‘shut up to her’.

She continues to cycle away and sticks her finger up at him. So he chases after her shouting abuse and then knocks her down.

The woman escaped unharmed following the incident on May 1 on Sydney Street in Whitechapel, East London.

A Metropolitan Police spokesman said: ‘Police were called to reports of a female cyclist assaulted on Sidney Street, off Whitechapel Road shortly after 18:00hrs on Friday, 1 May.

‘The man swore at her and chased her down the street. He shouted at her and then pushed her off her bike into the path of passing traffic.

‘Fortunately, she managed to get out of the road and move herself and her bike to safety out of the way of moving traffic.

‘The woman was very upset following the assault but did not require medical attention.’

Entertasinment: ‘What on earth were you thinking?’: Courtney Love writes heartbreaking note to Kurt Cobain

Courtney Love posted the throwback snap on Instagram as she paid tribute to her tragic husband (Picture: Instagram)

Two decades on from his tragic suicide, it seems Courtney Love still has many unanswered questions for her husband Kurt Cobain.

The 51-year-old paid touching tribute to the Nirvana frontman – who took his own life in April 1994 aged just 27 – on the occasion of their daughter Frances Bean’s 23rd birthday, by posting a series of throwback snaps on Instagram.

The pics, taken from a photoshoot published in Spin Magazine in December 1992 show Kurt cradling their baby daughter as he and Courtney sit together on a brass bed.

Courtney said of the snap: ‘Makes me feel so sad. Our baby is all grown up now. Jesus Kurt, what on earth were you thinking…???’

The heatbreaking note added: ‘God I miss you. We all miss you.’

A second snap shows Frances sleeping on his lap as he lies with his legs resting up against the bedhead, which Courtney captioned: ‘My greatest love and our precious Bean.’
The photos were taken from a 1992 shoot in Spin Magazine (Picture: Instagram)

Courtney and Frances Bean – who is now 23 – recently produced documentary Montage Of Heck, about Kurt’s life – which was released in UK cinemas in April and shown on HBO in the US in May.

She told its director Brett Morgen that watching the finished film ‘f****d her up’, explaining: ‘Nobody else was as funny. Nobody else was as compatible and got my jokes. And you can see it in the film.’

Courtney added: ‘I remembered how much I love him, and it made me think about a few other people I don’t want to name, but a few other people I’ve been in love with.

‘And should I have married them? The answer is actually no.’

Man discovers there is something very unnerving about a field of silent kangaroos

First there was the news that a kangaroo with ‘intimidatingly’ large pecs was stalking a town in Australia. And now this.

This video shows footage captured by a lone cyclist travelling through Hawkstowe Park, 23km from Melbourne, and it’s pretty unnerving.

Cyclist Ben Vezina is heard whispering ‘I’m going to be honest, I’m a little bit terrified,’ as he cycles throught the park, full of silent, motionless kangaroos, at dusk.

As he moves through the watchful group, several start to move, appearing to regroup further down the path.

Of course, eastern grey kangaroos are not considered dangerous to humans – unless provoked.

And, we’re pretty sure Ben made it out unharmed.

Almost positive.

Timothy West’s life mimics The Notebook as wife Prunella Scales cannot remember their 53-year-long marriage

Prunella Scales and Timtohy West (Picture: Spun Gold TV)

In The Notebook, Allie Calhoun suffers from Alzheimer’s and struggles to remember the life she shared with her soulmate Noah.

And that sadly is the case for Prunella Scales, the beloved Fawlty Towers star who cannot remember her 53-year-long marriage to husband Timothy West.

The 80-year-old actor speaks candidly about his 83-year-old wife’s illness in an upcoming episode of Piers Morgan’s Life Stories and, according to Morgan, gets very emotional after the interview when Prunella can’t remember taking part – even though she was sitting in the audience.

Morgan said: ‘She [Scales] was in the audience – he [West] wanted her there – and he wanted to talk about her illness in front of her.

‘He said “don’t worry about it because she won’t remember”.

‘Afterwards I said “did you enjoy the show?” and she had no memory of being in the show. It’s heartbreaking and he [West] got very emotional about it.

The couple had played down her dementia up until now, saying last year that Scales only had a mild form of the illness.

It had affected her short-term memory first, causing her to forget simple things like how to make a cup of tea. But, as it progressed, the actress struggled to remember her children’s birthday or the year she married West.

‘[Timothy West] has been utterly selfless and fantastic in that respect but you could see the total sadness etched on his face that they can’t share all the stuff they have shared because she can only remember parts of it,’ said Morgan.

I beat my wife for refusing sex, man tells court

By Bartholomew Madukwe

A 40-year-old man, Salau Kehinde, has told a Customary Court in Ikorodu, Lagos, that he physically abused his wife, Shakirat, 32, whenever she refuses to have sex with him, but that he had no intention of bathing her in hot water.

Shakirat had approached the court seeking for dissolution of their 10-year old marriage, blessed with two children.

According to her, “he would beat me whenever I returned from work. He would beat me when I told him I was too tired to have sex, or for any flimsy excuse. I want this court to dissolve our marriage and grant me custody of our children.”

Reacting to the wife’s allegation, Kehinde, who resides at 9, Fatai Oloko Street, Haruna, Ikorodu, assented to the claim that he used to beat her whenever she denied him sex and if she came home late from her trading business.

“I merely boiled the water so I could threaten her with it. I had no intention of bathing her in the water.

“She refuses to cook for me when she is pregnant. She also said I should look for another wife.”

Kehinde promised to stop beating or threatening his wife, adding that he was willing to take her back if she wants to stay with him.

The Court President, Olu Adebiyi, adjourned the matter to September 13 for possible reconciliation.

Nigeria: At least six dead, over 20 injured as suicide bombers strike in Yobe

At least eight persons have so far been confirmed killed in two separate suicide bomb attacks in Damaturu, the Yobe state capital.

Over 20 others are injured, officials and witnesses said.

One of the suicide attacks was at the entrance of the town’s major bus station.

Sources in Damaturu said the first bomb blast was heard echoing in from the Pompomari axis of the city as a male suicide bomber, said to be in his mid 20s, suddenly exploded on the street.

No one was affected, except himself.

Shortly after the Pompomari bombing, another one occurred at the Damaturu Motor Park.

According to witnesses the bomber was a female who was attempting to enter the park, but only got her device detonated at the gate.

A vehicle conveying passengers and coming out of the park was affected. Four persons in the vehicle were killed instantly.

Security personnel cordoned off the area shortly after the explosion, witnesses said.

A hospital source, who spoke to journalists on condition of anonymity said “five bodies were brought in from the scene of the blast; that is if you add the remains of the female suicide bomber. “But two later gave up while receiving treatment at the accident and emergency ward”.

Damaturu park has suffered similar attacks in the past months.

PRNigeria, an agency that distributes press statements for Nigerian security agencies, quoted a Yobe state spokesperson as confirming the incident and the casualty figure.

The agency quoted the Director of Media and Publicity to Yobe State Governor, Abdullahi Bego, as saying the dead had been evacuated to mortuary while the injured victims were being attended to by health and emergency workers.

Football transfer rumours: Manchester United ready to seal £240m Neymar?

Neymar: definitely genuinely heading to Manchester United for £240m and not at all attempting to add a few zeros to his next Barcelona contract, no sirree. Photograph: Albert Gea/Reuters

The Mill is not a happy Mill this fine Tuesday. The Mill has been a Victim of Crime. Theft, to be exact – to whit, one bicycle wheel, pilfered by persons unknown and forcing the Mill to get the bus to Guardian Towers rather than enjoy the usual thrill of the pedalled commute. It’s an inconvenience, an annoyance. But the Mill says this to the thief: listen, and understand. The Rumour Mill is out there. It can’t be bargained with. It can’t be reasoned with. It doesn’t feel pity, or remorse, or fear. AND IT ABSOLUTELY WILL NOT STOP, EVER, UNTIL YOU ARE DEAD.

Well, that escalated quickly. But then these things often do. Take Manchester United’s pursuit of jinking Brazilian hair model Neymar. Just when you think that a £140m bid is enough to trigger the Barcelona man’s buyout, it turns out that the whole thing is going to cost you £240m! Today’s tabloid tittle-tattle puts the total price for the 23-year-old at a staggering £240m … and United are apparently willing to pay it.

Live Transfer window news: Mario Balotelli returns to Milan and more – live!
Rolling report: Keep up to date with all the day’s transfer news and rumours with Jacob Steinberg as the deadline creeps closer

Brazil’s GloboEsporte reckons United have already offered the £140m required to spring Neymar from the Camp Nou and you can stick another £100m on that in tax, wages and add-ons.

The Mirror report that Arsène Wenger is on “red alert” – which, as we all know, comes right after blue alert although it does mean changing the bulb – over a move for Edinson Cavani. Karim Benzema has said “Merci mais non merci” to the prospect of a move to north London so Arsenal have turned to the Uruguayan currently meh-ing his way through a spell at Paris Saint-Germain.

Chelsea are to push ahead with a £70m offer for midfield destroyer/creator Paul Pogba despite Juventus being about as keen to part with their prize asset as a wolfhound who has found a particularly pungent bone. To make themselves feel better, Chelsea will head to Croatia for some retail therapy and sign the Hajduk Split goalkeeper Lovre Kalinic instead.

West Ham’s attacking ranks currently in the same sort of state as Murphy after the opening scene of Robocop. Slaven Bilic wants a striker and that pressing need means they win today’s Team Linked With The Most Players At Once Award for Outstanding Achievement in the Field of Excellence. Firstly, a loan deal for Tottenham’s Emmanuel Adebayor could be back on, as long as Spurs cough up for a portion of his wages.

But the Hammers are also keen on Toulouse’s Wissam Ben Yedder, Galatasaray’sBuruk Yilmaz and Juventus’s Simone Zara. And that’s not all – Bilic is also kicking the tyres of Chelsea’s Victor Moses, Tottenham’s Aaron Lennon and Manchester United’s Janet Jazz Jazz Jam. Just for good measure, they’re also lining up a return for the Queens Park Rangers goalkeeper Robert Green.

Galatasaray have all but sealed a deal for the Manchester City defender Jason Denayer [No they haven’t – Homonym Ed], while Napoli’s Jonathan de Guzmánhas turned down a move to Sunderland.

Norwich City’s search for a striker has led them all the way to Crystal Palace’sGlenn Murray. They’ll offer £5m for the 31-year-old. And if that doesn’t work, well then they’ll turn their attentions to Wolves and the England Under-21 frontman Benik Afobe.

Champions League-chasing Leicester City are back in for the Birmingham tyroDemarai Gray and they’ll make another move to sign Copenhagen’s Daniel Amartey before deadline day.

And finally the Mill just googled “repair leaky hull” in an attempt to shoehorn a needless nautical metaphor into the story of West Brom’s interest in Jonny Evansand discovered that “the grandaddy of all leaks is the leaky hull-to-deck join”, a fact comfortably more interesting than Albion’s attempts to sign the Manchester United defender and therefore a fine place to end.

Boy, 12, trips up and punches hole in £1million painting

Fortunately for this 12-year-old, his family are not being asked to pay for the restoration of a painting he just ripped.

He was visiting a museum when he tripped over and put his hand through a 350-year-old painting worth £1million.

As you might expect, he looks round guiltily after damaging the Paolo Porpora oil painting of flowers.

He was described by Andrea Rossi, curator of the exhibition, as being nervous, but added that she did not want him to be blamed.

An MP was told off for having breasts in a TV interview

A female MP was told to ‘put her breasts’ away by a Labour supporter after appearing in a television interview with Channel 4 News.

Alison McGovern, the shadow city minister, was shocked to receive a letter criticising her clothing choice because her ‘prominent cleavage’ was too ‘obvious’.

Apparently this was very distracting for male viewers while she discussed George Osborne’s plans for future governments to have to run on a surplus when the economy is in good shape.

Hmmm.

JG Hunter – who doesn’t identify themselves as either male or female – added that this was an ‘observation’ rather than a complaint but accused Ms McGovern of a deliberate attempt to attract attention to herself.

I couldn’t help wondering why you felt it necessary to demonstrate your cleavage so obviously on TV. I can only imagine it was deliberate in order to attract attention to yourself as the Labour spokesperson?

As a Labour member might I say that your prominent cleavage distracted your male observers from hearing what you were saying. Indeed as an experienced women [sic] politician, I found this strategy – hardly accidental – for someone of your age and experience difficult to comprehend. This is not a complaint however, merely an observation, I’m sure your PR people will have advised you on your attire

Reacting to the letter, Ms McGovern said she didn’t know whether to ‘laugh or cry’ after receiving the letter back in June.

She shared it on Twitter in response to a controversial piece in the Spectator questioning whether Yvette Cooper and Liz Kendall had the looks to be Labour leader.

This isn’t the first time female MPs have been criticised for showing too much breast on TV.

Labour councillor Jessica Asato also shared this:

Here is Ms McGovern’s interview in full.

Please Read and Share: Fashola's Looting of Lagos in 8 years: Unmasking Deux Projects Ltd, Dr. Tunji Olowolafe, the masquerades behind Fashola’s headaches.

Fashola

It is no longer news that former Lagos State governor, Babatunde Raji Fashola is embattled at the moment, as the ‘Mr. Saint’ reputation he seemed to have built over the years is fast crumbling, no thanks to series of disclosures from the new Lagos State administration under Mr. Akinwunmi Ambode, a former Accountant General of the state, allegedly retired prematurely by the former governor.

Fashola who was seen by many as an example of good leadership is presently enmeshed in series of corruption allegation.

Emerging facts reveal that the lawyer turned politician was engaged in primitive consumption and accumulation of wealth. And this, he allegedly did through Dr. Tunji Olowolafe, Managing Director/Chief Executive Officer of Deux Projects Limited and the favored proxy of his estranged godfather, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

Authoritatively inside sources told DAILY POST that, over 70 percent of Lagos State government’s contracts, particularly in the construction sector, were awarded to Tunji Olowolafe, a trained medical doctor and onetime cab driver in London.

Tunji’s company, Deux, which fronted for Fashola, allegedly cornered the Lagos State Government’s contract market.

According to the source, the business romance between Olowolafe and Lagos State started during the two term tenure of Asiwaju Bola Tinubu as Governor, when his company was awarded virtually all the contracts for the refurbishment of hospitals and several others in the state’s health sector at bloated and inflated costs.

Deux Project was given the contract to refurbish LASUTH, (former General Hospital, Ikeja) and maintain the place for a while. During Tinubu’s reign, Deux also built several wards within the hospital and other General Hospitals in the state like Ifako Ijaiye, Isolo , Badagry, Epe to name a few.

Though Gov. Fashola’s performance in his first four-year tenure was quite impressive, investigations however revealed that the governor allegedly helped himself to a chunk of the money in the Lagos treasury in his second term.

The award of a 50 Billion Naira contract to Tunji Olowolafe’s company for the expansion of the Lagos-Epe 43 kilometer road also remains mind boggling. What the figure translates to is that Fashola awarded the contract to reconstruct an already existing road with 1 billion Naira per kilometer!

The same Olowolafe is also in charge of the Bar Beach Water Front, another multi-billion naira project.

A source at the Lagos State government office told DAILY POST that, “The mere fact that BRF had good publicity does not mean he worked hard and properly as he ought to. He manipulated the media and hoodwinked the unsuspecting public to his advantage and went to sleep. Lagos State became a big bazaar where public funds were wantonly shared among cronies under him.

“Monies were kept in different individual accounts for BRF. Chief of whom is Dr. Tunji Olowolafe, a trained medical practitioner turned powerful political jobber”.

In the wake of the larger than life elevation of the medical doctor within government circles in Lagos State under Fashola, many were forced to ask the questions, who is Tunji Olowolafe? What is the relationship between BRF and Tunji Olowolafe? Why was it that it was only Tunji Olowolafe that handled all the contracts in Lagos State, in all ministries and parastatals, including road construction and what have you? Why was it that whenever Olowolafe was awarded any mega contract, he was always paid 70 per cent up front?

It will be recalled that Olowolafe, whose company was allegedly used as front by the Lagos State governor to execute inflated contracts, was arrested on Friday, April 23, 2010, by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, after investigators discovered that 27 contracts were awarded to the company from the state Ministry of Health and three from the Ministry of Education.

He was drilled for three days while in the anti-graft body’s custody and was believed to have made significant and useful contributions to the efforts by EFCC to unravel facts on the various allegations of corruption against Fashola, which also led to the invitation of Fashola himself and some members of his cabinet.

Despite the established fact that Deux Projects Limited collected more than N10 billion from the state coffers, nothing has been heard of the case even in the face of damning confessions by Olowolafe to the EFCC while in their custody.

Dr Tunji Olowolafe is also a director in Lekki Concession Company. The company resurfaced and expanded the Mobil/Lekki Expressway and toll-gates. It is in charge of collection of the controversial toll on the Lekki-Epe corridor of Lagos State.

The Lagos State government had also claimed that Fashola awarded a contract for the drilling of two boreholes at the Lagos House, Ikeja for N139m to the same company, Deux Projects Limited.

According to the report, the contracts were awarded by the Lagos State Tenders Board in 2013.

In the same year, N300 million was spent on the relocation of cables belonging to the Power Holding Company of Nigeria at the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital. The contract was awarded to Deux Projects Limited.

Similarly, N220 million was said to have been spent on the facility management of the Lagos State University College of Medicine. The contract was awarded to Deux Projects Limited.

The former governor, according to the report, spent N619 million on surface repair on Ajara-Erekiti-Iragon-Ikoga Road in Badagry Local Government.

According to the report also, Fashola spent N1.2 billion on the construction of an unidentified multi-storey building in Onikan, Lagos.

The former governor was also said to have spent N1.6 billion on the construction of a 48-bedroom hotel at Lagos State VIP Chalets, Badagry.

About N510 million was spent on the re-modelling and equipping of the official residence of the state’s Chief Judge at 4 Thompson Avenue, Ikoyi, Lagos, according to the report.

About N165 million was spent on the construction of an 18-classroom block at Ajara Senior Grammar School, Ajara Badagry. The same amount was also spent on an 18-block classroom at Community Senior/Junior Secondary School, Bayeku, Ikorodu.

Other contracts awarded the company, Deux Projects Limited, included: Facility Management of Mother and Child Centre, Ifako Ijaiye (Clinical), Facility Management of Mother and Child Centre, Ifako Ijaiye (Non Clinical}, Facility Management of Lagos State University College of Medicine (LASUCOM) – Contract A (Non Clinical Services) and Construction of a Four (4) Storey Faculty of Basic Medical Science Office Block for Lagos State University College of Medicine (LASUCOM).

Others are Facility Management of Lagos State University Teaching Hospital (LASUTH) from January to December 2010, Facility and Technical Management of the Bola Tinubu Health and Diagnostic Centre, LASUTH, Ikeja (Extension of Contract), Construction of Maternal and Child Care Centre (MCC), Epe (Equipment), Construction of Maternal and Child Care Centre (MCC), Epe (Building), Construction of Maternal and Child Care Centre (MCC), Badagry (Equipment) and Construction of Maternal and Child Care Centre (MCC), Badagry (Building).

The company also got contracts for the Rehabilitation of Network of Roads (Oyetayo/ Church Boladele (Part) and Jimoh Akinosi in Oshodi / Isolo LGA. Completion of Adekunledeen / Obasuah / Omoniyi / Ekunjimi / Raimi / Ogunderu Streets, Sari Iganmu, in Apapa LGA, Construction of Maternal and Child Health Centre, Amuwo Odofin (Additional Works) and the Redevelopment of Agege Stadium, Phase II

Others are Rehabilitation of Hospital Road, Gbagada and the Construction of Link Bridge between Medina Estate and Atunrase Estate.
