Timothy West’s life mimics The Notebook as wife Prunella Scales cannot remember their 53-year-long marriage

In The Notebook, Allie Calhoun suffers from Alzheimer’s and struggles to remember the life she shared with her soulmate Noah.

And that sadly is the case for Prunella Scales, the beloved Fawlty Towers star who cannot remember her 53-year-long marriage to husband Timothy West.

The 80-year-old actor speaks candidly about his 83-year-old wife’s illness in an upcoming episode of Piers Morgan’s Life Stories and, according to Morgan, gets very emotional after the interview when Prunella can’t remember taking part – even though she was sitting in the audience.

Morgan said: ‘She [Scales] was in the audience – he [West] wanted her there – and he wanted to talk about her illness in front of her.

‘He said “don’t worry about it because she won’t remember”.

‘Afterwards I said “did you enjoy the show?” and she had no memory of being in the show. It’s heartbreaking and he [West] got very emotional about it.

The couple had played down her dementia up until now, saying last year that Scales only had a mild form of the illness.

It had affected her short-term memory first, causing her to forget simple things like how to make a cup of tea. But, as it progressed, the actress struggled to remember her children’s birthday or the year she married West.

‘[Timothy West] has been utterly selfless and fantastic in that respect but you could see the total sadness etched on his face that they can’t share all the stuff they have shared because she can only remember parts of it,’ said Morgan.
