In continuation of this series from yesterday, I will emphasize more on how you can raise money through "Crowd Funding" for your business, legally.

This article is on 'how you can break the jinx' of economic stagnation as a young man or woman in thei present day Nigeria or wherever you may be.

The concept of raising money for your business ideas by collaborating with other people of like minds in establishing a viable business venture.

"Crowd funding", is the practice of funding a project or venture by raising many small amounts of money from a large number of people, typically via the Internet."

What you need to set up a solid business group via crowd funding;

• Get a pen and paper to put your business idea in writing

• Get a budget

• Find market for your business around your area and beyond. Spread your tentacles and dream big

• Discuss your plan with the people who can invest in the idea and explain their status in the investment. Be specific and imaginative if you have to.

• You will need a good business or investment lawyer, from a reputable law firm/chamber that can set up a partnership legal framework for your group

• Use the Internet for more opportunities for your business. You must have your targeted consumers -- possibly around the world. Agricultural business will earn you more forex in this area.

There are friends who are planning to start small businesses, albeit independently. For example; if your friend is planning to invest his money in Telecommunication business - recharge cards so to say. And you plan opening a phone shop, in a small way. Maybe another friend is planning to buy a bike for commercial purpose; the three of you can come together with your money and invest in a bigger, well organized recharge cards business. 'Your return will be determined by your investment.'

Life they say, is "the condition that distinguishes animals and plants from inorganic matter, including the capacity for growth, reproduction, functional activity, and continual change preceding death." - the origins of life. Life begins from our first breath and ends at our last. While human nature is described as the primary determinant of what a man would become. Simply defined as "the general psychological characteristics, feelings, and behavioural traits of humankind, regarded as shared by all humans." We all have the same instinct of survival whenever our comfort zones are threatened.

On this note I want share my personal opinion and advice with the people of my constituency -- the youth.

I wrote a similar post on how the youth can break the jinx of enslavement covertly embedded in the policy of successive governments in Nigeria and indirectly, sustained the generational socioeconomic incapacitation prevalent among the millions of Nigerian youth still living in the country.

I wrote about cooperative investment and middleman ideals in gaining economic independence.

In this article, I will enunciate further on why it is better to be an employee of labour than "apply-er" of labour, -- and how.

I had a discussion on this same topic with a friend in Nigeria asking me to raise some money for a business back home. He had a very brilliant idea in agricultural business that can yield good return, with a moderate investment. But my friend had no capacity to put his idea into practice cuz of the needed start up capital.

In my response; I asked if there were no alternative ways of raising the money? The banks -- especially the micro finance banks? He only belabored me with sad tales of what you will have to go through in securing the loans, and other sundries! Then I asked if he knew anything about "crowd funding"? I knew he won't have an idea, just like many of you reading this.

"Crowd funding", is the practice of funding a project or venture by raising many small amounts of money from a large number of people, typically via the Internet. So many people have raised unbelievable amounts of money to support good causes, all around the world - via the Internet. Crowd funding can be used to raise campaign money for a popular candidate who has no financial strength to back his campaign.

But you don't need an internet based "crowd funding" group before you can start something that will change your life forever. You can live your dreamed life by working with another group of people with the same goal like yours, all by pulling your small resources together to start a business.

In the next two series, I'll explain more on;

***How can you set up a successful "Crowd Funding" group, backed by a solid legal agreement, signed by all the stakeholders, for your next business adventure.

***Three business ideas that can be funded through "Crowd Funding".

...Save the rivers and streams in Odogbolu;

While growing up in Odogbolu, in the 80s, my first understandings of responsibility started from cleaning my personal belongings, to cleaning the house and of course, fetching water from kilometers-long source -- rivers and streams.

Odogbolu is the headquaters of Odogbolu Local Government Area of Ogun State.

Apart from the time of General Oladipo Diya, the Asiwaju of Odogbolu, as the Vice President of Nigeria, when we had regular water supplies in our public taps, people of Odogbolu would fetch their water from the streams for domestic use -- not sure if it was better before I was born, but the picture I painted above is my personal experience.

I am not sure of how many they are in all, but I'll list few major ones here;

In Odogbolu we have three (3) quarters, they are; Odo, Efiyan and Agada. Within these three quarters, we have another sub-quarters with their own Olorituns as the heads and they are; Igbodile, Ikosa, Iloda, Eyin-Edi, Igbepa, Itun-Oke, Ibu, Idena, Itun-Węna, Ipebi (and others I can't remember right now).

Each quarter hosts at least a river in Odogbolu.

In Odo Area, the river there is called Eri-Odo (Odo river). It is small and can't be more than 4 feet deep. It is along the Ita-Odo Ikenne-Ilisan link road. This same stream linked another stream of about 2km away called Ayetutu. That stream is located at the back of Gen. Oladipo Diya's house in Agada.

Agada, Quater; the biggest river in Odogbolu is located in this part of the town. It is called "Uren". It is longer than 2 Olympic size swimming pool. It 10-12ft deep at the extreme end, and about 6ft deep near the bridge. It play host to largest number of visitors during festive seasons. Ileya period is the busiest. From DJs to food vendors to booze merchants, Uren river is a top tourist destination in my town. It is along Odogbolu Aiyepe Road, before the police station at Oke Uren.

We have Eri Ikosa for the Ikosa people. A big river is also at the back of Odogbolu Grammar School in Oko Oke Hill, Efiyan, serving the people of the area. We have Eri Kekere and so on.

What this post is all about is to awaken the minds of every stakeholder in the "Project Odogbolu" and remind them that these monuments are no longer what they used to be.

Their natural existence, valor, and beauty have been altered by environment abusers.

Micro economic businesses are good for our town, so also our is environmental wellbeing. Constructing fish ponds near rivers is not a bad idea as long as the the environment is protected and nature is allowed to enjoy its ambience.

A situation where waste waters are emptied into a already contaminated river, due to your business location, is unacceptable.

The Caretaker committee Chairman in the Local Government, Mr Opanuga should as a matter of necessity take a very good look into the activities of these fish pond businesses located around our rivers in the local government -- especially in Odogbolu.

An environmental sanitation task force should be commissioned to check the day-to-day activities of the businesses. A policy should be formulated that will guide and sanction any abuser of our environment.

We all know the daily harrowing experiences our people goes through in getting drinkable water. Government's efforts in providing clean and drinkable water running from our taps is still very poor and unimpressive. Therefore, the continuous drinking from the river by major part of our people, on Odogbolu, can't be under-emphasized.

Waiting for disaster to happen before acting won't do anyone any good. The epidemic cholera outbreak of last year in Abeokuta is still fresh in our memories. Many of the dead victims died drinking from a contaminated river after road construction had disrupted water supply in the area at the time.

Odogbolu must not experience that too.

Prevention they say, is better than cure. The time to act is now.

This is what the former Speaker had to say about his preference for Dogara as the new speaker, instead of Gbajabiamila, the man who jumped the fence for him (Tambuwal) in 2011 to become the speaker back then. While explaining the reason for his action, he said;


“The survival of the legislature as an important arm of government made it imperative that competent hands are headhunted to be its leaders”.

“Eight out of ten members of the Body of Principal Officers in the last Assembly supported Dogara’s aspiration. Only Hon Femi (Gbajabiamila) and Hon Datti Ahmad supported Femi.”

“I have strong affinity with Hon Femi. He was closer to me than Dogara. But when talking about leadership and collective decisions, sentiments have to be put aside. I’m not here to tell you that my support made Dogara the Speaker, no. Two things made Dogara to become the Speaker, one is God and two, Dogara’s competence.

The acknowledgement of Dogara’s competence did not start with me. It started from the time of Hon Patricia and Etteh and Hon Dimeji Bankole when they entrusted him with a sensitive position of the Chairman of House Services Committee."

“The committee is one of the most sensitive in the legislature. Apart from taking care of the welfare of members, the committee oversees all procurement processes. As the Speaker, I only did what my predecessors did by giving Dogara this sensitive position."

“No person, as far as I know, has ever served as chairman of the House Services committee in two dispensations. Dogara broke that jinx. All through my tenure, I brought Dogara close to me because I found in him a person who is competent, accommodating, and with capacity to lead."
