A female MP was told to ‘put her breasts’ away by a Labour supporter after appearing in a television interview with Channel 4 News.
Alison McGovern, the shadow city minister, was shocked to receive a letter criticising her clothing choice because her ‘prominent cleavage’ was too ‘obvious’.
Apparently this was very distracting for male viewers while she discussed George Osborne’s plans for future governments to have to run on a surplus when the economy is in good shape.
Hmmm.
JG Hunter – who doesn’t identify themselves as either male or female – added that this was an ‘observation’ rather than a complaint but accused Ms McGovern of a deliberate attempt to attract attention to herself.
I couldn’t help wondering why you felt it necessary to demonstrate your cleavage so obviously on TV. I can only imagine it was deliberate in order to attract attention to yourself as the Labour spokesperson?
As a Labour member might I say that your prominent cleavage distracted your male observers from hearing what you were saying. Indeed as an experienced women [sic] politician, I found this strategy – hardly accidental – for someone of your age and experience difficult to comprehend. This is not a complaint however, merely an observation, I’m sure your PR people will have advised you on your attire
Reacting to the letter, Ms McGovern said she didn’t know whether to ‘laugh or cry’ after receiving the letter back in June.
She shared it on Twitter in response to a controversial piece in the Spectator questioning whether Yvette Cooper and Liz Kendall had the looks to be Labour leader.
This isn’t the first time female MPs have been criticised for showing too much breast on TV.
Labour councillor Jessica Asato also shared this:
Here is Ms McGovern’s interview in full.
