Football: Wayne Rooney taunts Liverpool over Raheem Sterling’s Manchester City transfer

As a Manchester United captain and ex-Everton wonderkid, it is fair to say Wayne Rooney doesn’t receive any Christmas cards from Liverpool supporters.

And now the England skipper has run the risk of further alienating his fierce rivals by taunting them over Raheem Sterling’s transfer to Manchester City.

Rooney has claimed that the move was the right one for his England colleague’s career, and thinks that the 20-year-old winger is happier at the Etihad than he was at Anfield under Brendan Rodgers.

Speaking ahead of England’s Euro 2016 qualifier with Switzerland, Rooney said he feels that Sterling is finally ‘settled’ after completing the protracted switch from United’s fierce rivals Liverpool.

The Three Lions skipper said: ‘You can see he’s settled. He’s happy, I’m sure. He’s got the move he wanted. He’s started the season excellently and he has settled in really well at City.

‘When you are going through what he did, trying to leave Liverpool, it can be quite difficult. But he’s a lot more relaxed and settled, which is good for [England].’

Sterling agitated for a switch to City throughout the transfer window and missed two consecutive days of training after citing illness, before reportedly being asked to be left off the club’s pre-season tour of Malaysia, Australia and Thailand.

The England international’s agent, Aidy Ward, also had a public falling out with Liverpool, claiming that his client had no intention of signing a new contract at Anfield before Sterling was eventually moved on for £49m in July.
