Giving birth at home is such a private, emotional experience, that mums-to-be rarely get the chance to see how other people are doing it.
But one photographer wants to change that, capturing intimate photos of his girlfriend’s labour to share what a home birth is really like.
Gustavo Gomes and his girlfriend Priscila Bochi chose to skip the hospital and welcome their child at home after seeing a documentary called O Renascimento do Parto, which explores the high number of caesareans and traumatic births taking place around the world.

To expose an alternative to heading to hospital, Gomes decided to share photographs of Priscilla giving birth, charting the intense moments and emotions in a beautiful, yet honest, way.
(Priscila gave her permission for both the photo-taking and having the results shared online)
Gomes told metro.co.uk: ‘I’ve been photographing whatever happens in my life since 2009, so it was only natural photographing the birth of my first daughter.’

He hopes that by sharing their experience, he’ll show other women that they don’t necessarily have to go to the hospital to give birth.
‘Besides being our personal story, we hope these photos can raise awareness about natural and home childbirth in Brazil.

‘Our country has the highest caesarean rates in the World – around 50% of births in the public health system (SUS) and shockingly 87% in the private system.
‘Most of them [are done] with no medical reasons, just because C-sections can be scheduled and are quicker for the doctors to operate.’

Gustavo reassures us that Priscilla had a healthy birth where she felt safe and comfortable, saying that they ‘never felt helpless during the process with a doula, an obstetrician and a pediatrician.’
‘We hope that these photos can demystify natural and home childbirths and encourage future mothers to avoid unnecessary C-sections.’

And if you’re wondering why Gustavo was snapping photos instead of taking in the miracle of life, don’t worry, he managed to do both. All while helping Priscila through her labour, too.
He says: ‘Photographing the labor didn’t stop me from helping Priscila and being involved in the process.

‘That’s the reason why I don’t have any photo of Violeta coming out – I was there to be the first to hold her when she came to light.’
