Ooni can never die – Alaafin

Ooni-ife

By Ola Ajayi

Ibadan – OYO town, the domain of Alaafin of Oyo, Oba Lamidi Adeyemi yesterday broke silence on the death of Ooni of Ife, late Oba Okunade Sijuwade saying Ooni, as an institution, will live forever.

This was disclosed by the Chairman of Oranyan Planning Committee for Alaafin of Oyo, retired Archbishop Ayo Ladigbolu in Oyo town as part of activities marking the commencement of the festival.

The cleric said, “let me tell you that Ooni never dies. Ooni is not dead. What happened is going home of Oba Okunade Sijuwade, Olubuse 11. The Ooni lives for ever.

When asked to advise Ile-Ife kingmakers who are in the process of selecting a new king, he said,” We are not entitled to speak on this issue. The only competent authority is Alaafin and when it is appropriate, he will make comments.”

Before the death of Oba Sijuwade, there had been a strained relationship between him and Alaafin.

Speaking on the celebration of Oranyan, he underscored the importance of the progenitor, Odede Oranyan, noting that explained the presence of its shrine in Ile-ife, Oyo town, Pobe and Ibadan.
