India: Closing down of toll station between New Delhi and Gurgaon in 2014 has led to commuter chaos

You thought your commute was bad! Thousands of motorists stranded on a highway in incredible 26 lane jam as Indian city experiments with a new traffic management system

Bad commute: Motorists driving between New Delhi and Gurgaon this week faced a 26-lane traffic jam during their morning commute

A rush hour commute is a pain in the backside in any major city in the world, but this 26-lane traffic jam in New Delhi, India takes road rage to another level.

Traffic between New Delhi and Gurgaon on highway NH-8 has been a long-standing issue, which has been made worse by local government 'experiments' to solve the problem,Time of India reports.

Last year's dismantling of a 32-lane toll station between the two cities was said to be the relief commuters had been waiting more than five years for, however, as the toll plaza had helped regulate the flow, the result has been bottlenecking further down the express-way.

These images were published by New Delhi based Anil Sood, founder of 'Society for Protection of Culture, Heritage, Environment, Traditions and Promotion of National Awareness' (CHETNA), who has been running a long-standing campaign to highlight the issues of India's public transport and traffic system.

He posted the pictures on his Twitter account, with the caption: 'Corruption, inefficiency, robbery, fleecing of Commuters colossal national waste of precious FE man hours[sic]'.

The demolition of the toll plaza has also drawn complaints from residents in Gurgaon, who as early as last year highlighted the issues with noise and a higher risk of accidents as the barriers that had regulated traffic disappeared.
