West Ham have confirmed Manuel Lanzini could miss up to six weeks of action after sustaining an injury to his thigh in training.
The Argentine missed Saturday's clash against Manchester United at Old Trafford, and it was thought he would be absent for around a fortnight, but the Hammers have announced the injury could keep him sidelined for a number of weeks.
In a statement on their website, West Ham said: "Lanzini underwent a scan on Monday and will now begin a period of rehabilitation which is expected to keep him out of first-team action for a period of up to six weeks."
He has four goals for the Irons so far having played in 12 of their Premier League fixtures after joining on loan from UAE-based outfit Al-Jazira.
His form has led to rumours linking him with a move to Liverpool when his loan spell in the East End expires.
Winger Victor Moses is also expected to miss the festive period after suffering a hamstring problem.
Boss Slaven Bilic said: “We have to wait for a scan but it doesn’t look good."
It is a bitter blow for the Londoners who had striker Diafra Sakho ruled out last week for up to three months.
He joined Dimitri Payet who is out until February and Enner Valencia who is still out for another three to four weeks.
