Jose Mourinho only remains Chelsea boss because of his past success says Ray Wilkins

But Wilkins believes it'll be the end for the Special One if Mourinho's former club Porto can knock the Blues out of the Champions League this week/

Jose Mourinho has stayed in charge as Chelsea boss because of past glories.

But former Chelsea coach Ray Wilkins predicts even Mourinho will not survive if they crash out of the Champions League this week.

Mourinho is in serious danger after Chelsea’s disastrous form in the Premier League has left them just two points above the relegation zone.

But the even bigger worry is they face a battle to stay in Europe’s top competition as they need a victory over Porto to guarantee their place in the Champions League knock-out stages.

That has left even Wilkins - one of Mourinho’s biggest supporters - fearing Roman Abramovich will pull the trigger if they go out of the Champions League with their place in the top four also in jeopardy.

Another defeat - Chelsea 0-1 Bournemouth:

Chelsea legend Wilkins, in an interview with beIN Sports, said: “Any other manager would have gone, there are no two ways about it. Mourinho is only still there, purely and simply, for what he’s done in the past.

“The big thing for Mourinho is Europe, he loves the European competition and Abramovich just adores it, so if they lose against Porto, then he could be on his way.

“They are away at Leicester next week so if something is going to happen, it will happen, I would have thought, after this week. I don’t think it will happen this week.”

Wilkins admits he is surprised by Chelsea’s wretched form and claims they have lost their sense of invincibility under Mourinho.

The Chelsea legend and former England star even claims that he felt bottom-of-the-table Aston Villa thought they had a chance of beating them.

Wilkins also believes the dressing room dynamic has changed from last season, the spirit has ebbed away and doubts whether Mourinho will be backed in the transfer market.

Wilkins, who was No.2 to former Villa boss Tim Sherwood, said: “You sensed you had a chance, you really did. I’ve watched them a lot and I thought we would have a chance against them. They weren’t the same side. They weren’t hunting the ball down.

“He keeps faith in what he feels is his best eleven. Hazard will always play. If John Terry is fit, he’ll always play. I always feel when John Terry doesn’t play they almost look rudderless and they don’t look as if they’ve got a leader.

“In the dressing room, sometimes they need to have a pop at each other and they’re not doing it, the modern day footballer.

“Whichever job Mourinho has taken, he’s taken it thinking he’ll get his own way. Maybe the purse strings have been tucked in a little bit.

“The way Mourinho is talking you can see he has identified the players he feels aren’t up to scratch and he’ll be looking to move them on.”

Ex-England boss Kevin Keegan also voiced fears as to whether Mourinho can turn things around after Chelsea’s latest setback against Bournemouth and claims their hopes of finishing top four have gone.

Keegan, talking to beIN Sports, added: “Chelsea are struggling to find any kind of form. I felt if ever Chelsea were going to have a chance of getting back into the top four, which I still thought up until this match they could, it’s gone now.

“It’s not only gone because there is a gap appearing, it’s gone because they’ve lost their way. Their best players (last season) are almost their worst players and they just seem like a club that’s not able to dominate a game anymore. You watch that team and you can’t see them going on a good run.

Not themselves: Matic and Fabregas have endured poor seasons

“Matic was outstanding last season. This season, he’s not the same player. Ivanovic used to set the standard and now he’s not the same. Hazard is the same. If you take all those things away, you see now what looks a very average team.

“I’ve said it before with their pre-season but Chelsea look a little bit behind the pace and you can’t catch that up very quickly. For Fabregas it looks like the game is too quick for him. You take confidence out of a player, it can have that effect. The coach doesn’t really know how to put this right.

“Mourinho has never been in this situation before. He’s always had success on success. Something happened between him and Roman Abramovich. At the start of the season, we felt he wasn’t happy because he hadn’t got the players in that he wanted and I still feel it’s a little bit of that.”
