PDP accuses ruling party of recruiting killer squad to muzzle opposition

By Bridget Chiedu Onochie and Azimazi Momoh Jimoh

Olisa Metuh, National Publicity Secretary of the People’s Democratic Party.

POLITICAL hostilities between the ruling All Progressives’ Congress (APC) and the Peoples’ Democratic Party (PDP) resumed yesterday as the opposition party alleged that the President’s close associates have recruited a killer squad to hunt down perceived political opponents.

Addressing a press conference in Abuja yesterday, PDP National Publicity Secretary, Olisa Metuh claimed that Tuesday’s attack on the convoy of the Deputy Senate President, Ike Ekweremadu, was part of the plan by the APC to use violent means to muzzle opposition to facilitate President Muhammadu Buhari’s alleged 2019 re-election bid.

Meanwhile, Senate President, Bukola Saraki had to intervene to prevent a rowdy session when Senator Oluremi Tinubu, All Progressives Congress (APC), Lagos State, sat on the seat meant for Senator Ekweremadu.

The incident took place during plenary yesterday.
Tinubu, who wanted to second a motion on the approval of the Lagos State Development Policy Operation Loan, generated anger from PDP senators, when she stood up to speak while standing in the deputy senate president’s corner. The lawmaker however, bowed to the rebuke of the PDP senators and left for her seat to second the motion.

Metuh said, “The PDP does not mince words in holding the APC responsible for the Tuesday attempt on the life of the Deputy Senate President. As you are well aware, APC leaders have not hidden their bitterness and resentment towards Senator Ekweremadu, whose offense is the privilege of being elected as Deputy Senate President, in line with the Standing Rules of the Senate and provisions of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.”

Intelligence information available to us however, indicates that Senator Ekweremadu is not an isolated target, as notable PDP leaders, including our Acting BoT Chairman, Bello Haliru Mohammed, Acting National Chairman, Prince Uche Secondus National Secretary, Prof. Adewale Oladipo and members of the National Working Committee, Senate Minority Leader, Senator Godswill Akpabio, House Minority leader, Hon. Leo Ogor among others have also been penciled down for assassination,” he added

On the existence of the alleged killer squad, Metuh disclosed, “We have further information that some desperate power-mongers close to President Muhammadu Buhari, particularly those privy to his interest to contest the 2019 presidential election, and who have been reading his body language against the opposition, have gone ahead to establish a killer squad to wipe off strong opposition, deeming such a service to the President.”

This killer squad,” our intelligence further revealed, “has key marksmen recruited from within and outside the country with directives to trail, track down and hit strategic opposition elements and instill fear among PDP members.”
The PDP also alerted the international community of the grave consequences of alleged actions of the APC-led Federal Government urging them to hold the Presidency responsible for any harm that might befall PDP leaders.
