Senator Hassan Barata
A former chairman, senate committee on Culture and Tourism, Senator Hassan Barata, has been arrested in Saudi Arabia.
Senator Barata who is believed to have travelled to the holy land few weeks ago, may have overstayed when he was picked up by the Saudi security officials.
Barata represented Adamawa South in the sixth Senate, having been elected in 2011 on the ticket of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP.
It was learnt that he may have stayed back in Saudi Arabia for the Hajj.
He was also believed to be holding an official passport on the trip which has been withdrawn from former public office holders including former governors by President Muhammadu Buhari.
Few weeks ago, the federal government had directed the Nigeria Immigration Service to retrieve diplomatic and official passports from all persons who are not entitled to hold such documents.
Head of the National Hajj Commission, NAHCON in Medina, Dr Bello Tambuwal said he also heard of the arrest but said the senator presented false claims to security officials when questioned.
‘Yes I heard about it but it has nothing to do with us. It will be resolved at the diplomatic level,’ he said.
Dr Tambuwal pleaded with Nigerians on hajj to the holy land to always give correct information to the police when questioned.
‘There system is very clean here and once you don’t present any false claims you will be allowed to go,’ he said.
Senator Barata had last February defected to the All Progressives Congress, APC, but later returned to the PDP after losing his bid to pick the governorship ticket of Adamawa State
