North Korea – the surfing capital of the world?

Kim loves to ride those waves

Want to get away from it all and tear up the waves on a surfboard, man?

Look no further than the shadowy despotic state of North Korea – after portly megalomaniac Kim Jong-Un approved plans for a surfing camp to be established on the country’s east coast.

Now, some 20 advanced surfers from Italy, the US, China and Germany are heading to the hermit state to oversee the whole thing.

It’ll be led by Italian surfer Nicola Zanella, who is the team coach of China’s national surfing team, alongside Andrea Lee, the chief executive of US travel company Uri Tours.

And as for the location, Zanella has scouted the area of Sijuang – a six hour drive from Pyongyang.

‘It looks like there are wild forests that lead to pink- or yellow-sand bays. It is promising for surfing, as the cliffs protect the bay from wind coming off the ocean, but at the same time leaves the bay completely exposed to coastal storms’, he said.

But the trip isn’t cheap, and it’ll cost you £1,800 for the entire excursion – which also offers participants a ride on the Pyongyang metro, alongside a visit to the demilitarised zone bordering South Korea.
