Newcastle United are reportedly interesting in signing Werder Bremen centre-back Jannik Vestergaard, but will have to pay big money for him, according to reports.
German newspaper SportBild report that both the Magpies and West Ham want to bring the 6’7” 23-year-old to the Premier League in January, but say the Bundesliga side will settle for no less than £15million for his signature.
Denmark international Vestergaard – capped four times to date – moved to Bremen from Hoffenheim last January, but could be on the move again if his price tag is matched.
Steve McClaren’s side were also linked with the tall defender in the summer, along with Everton, but were told then that he was not for sale. That situation could change in the next window though, if Toon officials are willing to meet Bremen’s valuation.
Elsewhere, Italian newspaper Corriere dello Sport are claiming that Newcastle have been put on red alert by the news that Roma want to sell Ashley Cole in January.
The 34-year-old has not been involved in a single matchday squad this season and was also left out of their Champions League squad. The report claims that the Serie A side wish to cash in on the former England international, with his contract due to expire next summer.
Cole is another who was linked to Newcastle over the summer, though a reported transfer deadline day move for the full-back seem wide of the mark.
Newcastle’s policy on preferring to sign young players with the ability to grow and prosper remains, so any deal for Cole seems unlikely.
