Sport: Manchester United ready to give key defender new deal


GETTY Cameron Borthwick-Jackson looks set to be handed a new deal with Man Utd

The youngster broke into the first team under boss Louis van Gaal in November, making his debut from the substitutes bench against West Brom.

Borthwick-Jackson has gone on to produce some impressive displays in the United defence, including in the 1-0 win over Liverpool last weekend.

And now the Daily Mirror claim he will be rewarded for his performances with a new contract.

The defender reportedly earning £2,000-a-week at present but is set to sign a new £10,000-a-week deal this week.

REUTERS Manchester United boss Louis van Gaal is under pressure once again after Charlie Austin's 87th minute strike gave Southampton a 1-0 win at Old

The 18-year-old has stepped into United's defence in recent weeks due to the absence of Luke Shaw and Marcos Rojo.

Shaw is a long-term casualty after his ­double leg break at PSV ­Eindhoven in September, while Rojo is ­recovering from ­shoulder surgery.

And United's defensive injury crisis got worse on Saturday after Matteo Darmian was taken to hospital after clashing head's during the 1-0 defeat to Southampton.

United were planning to sign defensive cover this month, but Borthwick-Jackson’s emergence has persuaded Van Gaal to hold off.
