Sport: Linking Mourinho with Manchester United Job rumour is rubbish - Agent

GETTY Jorge Mendes has dismissed claims that his client has courted Manchester United

JOSE MOURINHO'S agent has rubbished claims that the Portuguese manager wrote a six-page letter to Manchester United.

Mourinho was dismissed as Chelsea manager shortly before Christmas after the Blues' disastrous start to their Premier League title defence and a series of touchline and dressing room bust-ups.

And claims emerged in the Independent on Sunday that the 52-year-old had written a letter to the board at Old Trafford his interest in taking over.

The letter is also supposed to have explained how he would adhere to the principles of the club and his plans for the team.

"It does not occur to anyone that a coach like Jose Mourinho can write letters to clubs offering their services," Mendes said.

"It is absolutely ridiculous and totally absurd."

The Portuguese manager has been a controversial figure throughout his career, branding himself 'The Special One' on his arrival at Chelsea in 2004.

Mourinho spent three successful years at the club before leaving, only to return six years later to win a third Premier League title before he was sacked last month.

His confrontational personal style and defensive football have been points of contention for United's board, especially Sir Bobby Charlton, but Mourinho has been open about his desire to manage at Old Trafford at some point in his career.

And after a 1-0 defeat to Southampton at home that leaves the Manchester club ten points off the top of the table, Louis van Gaal is once again under heavy pressure.

The fans booed him from the pitch and the Dutchman admitted that they were right to do so, suggesting he is reaching the end of his tether with his players.
