Why we’re spending N180m to renovate deputy gov.’s residence – Kano Govt.

The Kano State government has defended its decision to renovate Deputy Governor Hafiz Abubakar’s residence with N180 million, saying the decision was taken to raise the property to a level befitting of Mr. Abubakar.

GANDUJE

The clarification came amid outrage following the government’s earlier announcement of its plan to spend the amount on a building that only three months ago, was home to the former deputy governor of the state, Abdullahi Ganduje, who is now the governor.

The decision was further greeted with anger as it came alongside reports that the government was sacking 2,620 street cleaners who received N10, 000 monthly stipend.

In a statement Friday, the government denied dismissing the workers.

The commissioner for Information, Internal Affairs, Youths, Sports and Culture, Mohammed Garba, who signed the statement, said the programme was only “suspended” to allow a proper staff audit.

“To set the record straight, the appointment of the affected staff was not terminated but suspended pending the conclusion of screening exercise of all the staff by a committee to determine genuine, ghost, fake and non-existent staff among them,” the statement said.

“Government is very much worried and concerned with lack of proper documentation on each of the over 2,000 affected street sweepers who collect monthly N10, 000 allowance and, therefore, deemed it necessary to establish their true status in order to save public funds from been diverted using ghost workers or unjustifiably collected by absconded staff who only showed up at the cashier’s table at the end of every month.”

“All genuine and worthy staff will be cleared to resume duty at the end of the screening exercise,” the government said.

On the renovation of the deputy governor’s residence, the government denied reports that the face-lift was for Mr. Abubakar’s “office”.

He said the plan was to refurbish the deputy governor’s “residence” to a level befitting of his office.

“As for the alleged approval of N180million for the rehabilitation of the deputy governor’s office, no organization or individual or group in the name of government or otherwise ever talked about that since the inception of the administration because the said office was renovated and occupied just four months ago.

“The amount is for the general renovation of the official residence of the Deputy Governor to a standard befitting his status,” it said.

Teen can’t live with his family anymore because a girl he slept with ‘lied about her age’

Zach Anderson is no longer allowed to live at home with his family.

He can’t use the internet, take a walk in the park or go shopping.

In his words, he’s an ‘outcast from society.’

Why? Because he had sex with a 14-year-old who claimed she was 17 and is now a registered sex offender.

The 19-year-old, from Indiana, met the girl via a dating app called Hot or Not, on which she told him she was over the legal age of consent. But Zach was arrested after the pair slept together. Then he was convicted. He now finds himself on the Elkhart County sex offender register alongside child molesters and rapists.

Even the girl’s mother testified in court that she didn’t want Zach labelled as a sex offender because ‘he really is not.’

In a letter written by the girl to Zach’s family, she said she was ‘sorry I didn’t tell you my age. I really don’t want you to hate me.

‘It kills me everyday knowing that you are going through hell and I’m not. I want to be in trouble and not you.’

But Judge Dennis Wiley was far from sympathetic. Sentencing Zach, he said: ‘That seems to be part of our culture now. Meet, have sex, sayonara.

‘Totally inappropriate behaviour. There is no excuse for this, whatsoever.’

See What The Burial Of A MAn With Hunchbak Caused In Kwara

Fear has gripped residents of Omu-Aran in Kwara following the reported burial of one Femi, a hunchback, who died in a motor accident on Aug. 3.

According to claims, by the tradition, it is a taboo to bury a person with hunchback in the community. The corpse of such person must rather be hanged on a tree otherwise an evil will befall the community. Femi and four others died when an 18-seater bus they were travelling with, from Omu-Aran to Lagos, had an accident.

Although, relatives of the deceased had refused to speak on the rumour of Femi’s burial, already apprehensive residents now hang Jatropha leaves, locally called Lapalapa, on the entrance to their houses, to ward-off calamity. One of the residents, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said the relatives might have buried the deceased secretly to safeguard the body from ritualists.

“You know there are many traditions and ancient beliefs in this part of the world. “I think it is the fear that such body might be used for ritual purpose that forced the relatives to have a rethink and decided otherwise.” Pastor David Omorinoye, the Chairman, Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) Irepodun Local Government, said that prayers remained the key to every unpleasant situation.

According to Omorinoye, people should refrain from ungodly acts that could lead to the derailment of their faith in God. Alhaji Abdul Azeez Adeniyi, Chief Olupona of Omu-Aran, urged the residents to always pray for the stability and progress of the community rather than spreading unwarranted rumours.

“As far as Islam is concerned such belief is fictitious and without any basis. “We should rather devote our time to seek the face of Allah through constant prayers for the growth, progress and development of our communities,” he said.

Corruption: Kano governor to renovate deputy’s office for N180milion

...four months after it was built for N303 million

Ganduje, Gov Kano

Kano State governor, Abdullahi Ganduje, on Wednesday approved the termination of the employment of 2,620 sanitation workers on N10,000 stipend, just as he ordered the release of N180 million for the renovation of the office of the deputy governor.

The office, built at the cost of N303 million, was commissioned by the immediate past governor of the state, Rabiu Kwankwaso, on March 13.

Addressing reporters on the outcome of the weekly Executive Council Meeting, the state Commissioner for Information, Youth, Sports and Culture, Mohammed Garba, said the decision to lay off the casual workers was prompted by government’s resolve to ensure probity in their payroll.

Although he didn’t give reasons for the office renovation, the commissioner explained that most of the sacked workers were redundant as they hardly report to their duty posts.

Mr. Garba, a former president of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), said the state government plans to start the recruitment exercise afresh in order to select diligent workers for quality service delivery.

The commissioner also disclosed that the state governor approved the sum of N12 million for renovation of a ruptured bridge in Yaryasa village in Tudun Wada Local Government Area of the state

Read What Senator Shehu Sanni Had To Say About Governor El-rufai

“He is a technocrat, while I’m an activist and a revolutionary. So, my power base is the common people the masses who constitute my strength. They are the people I have lived with and fought for over the years. The way the governor is running the affairs of government in Kaduna State is the one which, if care is not taken, we will all sink.

“He has to take consideration of the fact that he met people that were impoverished, that were muscled, harassed and demoralized by the government of the PDP. So, first of all, they don’t need harsh policies that will further impoverish and alienate them. We need to carry them along, taking cognisance of the situation which we find them in. I fundamentally differ with him on that issue. For that reason, he has decided on his own not to even appoint people who identify with me in anyway and who are also seen to be from my camp.

The Senator said Mr. El-Rufai is ignorant of the needs of Kaduna residents and is in the process of plunging the state into ruins.

“Kaduna is a place I have I lived all my life and since I came out of prison in 1998, I have never been out of Kaduna for more than two weeks and I’ve never been appointed to any public office which I will live in Abuja and not know what is happening in Kaduna. So, I can tell you that within Kaduna North, Kaduna South and metropolis of Kaduna, there is hardly any street that I don’t know anybody.

“He is running the state in such a way that he will end up ruining all of us, which I will not be part of. He has taken some steps which have only attracted anger from the general public against him.

In what appeared to be an ego duel, Mr. Sani said he and governor have similar statuses.

“He is a governor, I’m also a Senator. He is not bigger than me, neither am I bigger than him.

“So, as far as I’m concerned, whether El-Rufai is a governor or whatever, anything which he does that does not tally with what is supposed to be done, I will certainly tell him,” Mr. Sani said

Mr. Sani objected to the recent ban of street begging announced by Mr. El-Rufai in July.

Trump lost up to 10 points in debate: Ex-WH aide

Donald Trump has courted controversy with his outspoken views on immigration and fellow Republicans, but the billionaire businessman may have been too reserved in his first GOP presidential primary debate, a former White House aide to George H.W. Bush said Friday.

"Donald Trump may have lost as many as 10 points some of my friends think," Joe Watkins told CNBC's "Squawk Box." "Donald Trump is best when he is unfiltered, and he wasn't as unfiltered last night as I thought he might be."

Donald Trump

Much of the attention in the first GOP presidential debate of the 2016 campaign was on Trump, who has rocketed to the top of the polls. Before Thursday night's debate, Trump commanded a 21 to 26 percent lead in a number of polls, according to Real Clear Politics.

Trump has both come under fire and surged in polls after saying many Mexican immigrants in the United States are criminals and rapists and insisting that Republican Sen. John McCain, who was a prisoner of war in Vietnam, was not a hero.

But that brashness was not on display Thursday night, Watkins said. He noted that Trump articulated his opposition to the Iran nuclear deal instead of offering an incendiary response to a question regarding the reported meeting between an Iranian general and Moscow in violation of U.N. sanctions.

Still, the other candidates showed they are a little afraid of Trump and were "fawning" over him, said Sara Fagen, chief political strategist at DDC Advocacy Partners. She noted that Sen. Ted Cruz "awkwardly" hugged him during a commercial break and Ohio Gov. John Kasich acknowledged the spirit Trump has captured within the Republican party.

However, she said she doesn't expect Trump's lead to last.

"Ultimately I think he's going to do two or three more of these debates and he will likely not have much substance like he did not last night, and ultimately that will catch up with him," she told "Squawk Box." "But for now he puts on an incredible show."

North Korea creates Pyongyang Standard Time in snub to Japan

KCNA | Reuters
North Korean leader Kim Jong Un speaks in an undated photo released April 26, 2015, by North Korea's Korean Central News Agency.

North Korea is creating its own time zone, moving its clocks back by 30 minutes to mark the 70th anniversary of Korea's liberation from Japanese rule, the official KCNA news agency said on Friday.

North Korea is in the same time zone as rivals South Korea and Japan, nine hours ahead of Greenwich Mean Time.

The change to what it calls "Pyongyang time" will become effective on Aug. 15 and return it to the time zone used across the Korean peninsula before Japanese rule.

"The wicked Japanese imperialists committed such unpardonable crimes as depriving Korea of even its standard time while mercilessly trampling down its land with 5,000 year-long history and culture and pursuing the unheard-of policy of obliterating the Korean nation," KCNA said.

Korea had used 127 degrees 30 minutes east - the longitude that KCNA said would be used for the new time zone - when it first introduced the concept of an official time zone in 1908.

Japan ruled the Korean peninsula from 1910 to 1945. A decree by colonial Japan in 1912 moved the time line to where Korea Standard Time is currently set, 135 degrees east longitude.

Husband takes his wife’s wee from the toilet to surprise her with her own pregnancy

Surely this is one of the first times in history that a man announced to his wife that SHE is pregnant?

But how did the crafty Sam manage to figure out Nia was pregnant before she did?

Well, it involved a toilet, an early wake up, and a high tolerance for a loved-one’s urine.

Basically Sam, knowing that Nia pees throughout the night but doesn’t flush for fear of waking up their kids, nipped into the bathroom early one morning and (here’s the gross bit) stole some of her urine from the toilet.

A true test of love (Picture: Sam and Nia/Youtube)

After conducting the pregnancy test Sam learns he is going to be a Daddy again – his reaction is pretty priceless

Yep, that’s the face (Picture: Sam and Nia/Youtube)

He toys around with Nia for a few minutes before breaking the news – her reaction is equally priceless.

If Sam and Nia look familiar, that’s because they were the Texas couple who gave a perfect lip-syncing rendition of Love is an Open Door from Frozen while their daughter looked bored in the back seat.

Woman has been carrying a foetus in her womb for the last 60 years

Estela (Picture: CNN)

This is 91-year-old Estela Melendez.

Doctors treating Estela in La Boca, Chile, believed she had a huge tumour growing inside her stomach and sent her for an X-ray.

But after the X-ray medics discovered the large mass was actually a calcified foetus in her womb – which posed no health risk

Estela, who had no idea she had become pregnant, had been carrying the child for at least six decades.

‘The doctor said I had a tumour and that they needed to operate on me,’ she told CNN.

Estela had been married to her husband Manuel Gonzalez for 74 years but the couple had been unable to have children together.

She said they had both ‘suffered tremendously’. Manuel died in January aged 91.

Since the discovery of the foetus, Estela has said she now considers it a reminder of the baby the pair longed for.

Doctors have decided not to remove the foetus as it is too risky operating on a woman of Estela’s age.
