Crash: Man killed after being knocked down while crossing road.

A man has died after he was knocked down by a lorry while crossing the road.
The pedestrian was hit by a Volvo articulated truck on a rural road in Ayr in the early hours of Friday.

Police and emergency services were called after the man was hit on the A77 between the Whitletts and Holmston roundabouts.

The driver of the vehicle, a 41 year-old man, contacted emergency services. The pedestrian, who has still to be identified, was taken to Ayr Hospital by ambulance where he later died of his injuries.

No other vehicles were involved and no one else was injured. The road was closed in both directions for a period to allow for police investigation.

Sergeant Kevin Blackley, of Irvine Trunk Road Policing Group, said: "This was a serious collision which has resulted in the death of a man.

"The road was closed in both directions to allow specialist officers to conduct their investigation. Our enquiries continue to determine the exact circumstances surrounding the incident.

"I would therefore ask that anyone who saw the crash happen or who has any information that will help us with our enquiries to contact Irvine Road Policing Department via 101.
