Scotland: Bomb disposal unit and armed police in Kirkcaldy after bank robbery

Armed police: Police are responding to reports of an armed robbery.STV

A bomb disposal unit and armed police have been called to a bank in Fife following a suspected armed robbery.

The incident took place in the Kirkcaldy Bank of Scotland branch at Carberry Place, next to the town's Asda supermarket.

Part of the B981 Dunnikier Way road was also closed off from around 1.30pm on Wednesday afternoon while emergency services responded to the incident.

Shoppers at Asda and pupils at St Marie's Primary School, which is nearby, were initially ordered to stay inside the buildings for their own safety but everyone has now been let go.

A police helicopter was also called to the area.

Police vehicles were seen at a property on Earn Road and at a car park next to Kirkcaldy High School. It is understood they are searching a car next to the high school.

A police spokesman said: "Police in Fife are in attendance following reports of a robbery at a bank in the Mitchelston Industrial Estate in Kirkcaldy.

"Officers were called to the incident at the Bank of Scotland at 1.30pm on Wednesday, November 11.

"No one has been injured but areas around the bank have been cordoned off. People at nearby premises including shops and schools were initially kept inside as a precaution, however these areas are no longer under cordon."

Superintendent Derek McEwan added "This is an unusual incident for Kirkcaldy and a large number of officers are currently working to ensure the area is safe, speak to those who have witnessed this robbery and return the area to normal as quickly as possible.

"I'd like to thank people for their patience whilst we carry out our enquiries.

"Our priority was to ensure the safety and wellbeing of all members of the public in the vicinity of this incident.

"A number of items were found and to ensure their safe removal, specialists from the military Explosive Ordnance Device Unit attended and examined them.

"These items are in the process of being removed but did not pose a risk to the public.

"A decision was also made to prevent the public from leaving nearby shop premises and schools for a short period of time, however this was done to ensure their safety.

"There were no threats directed at these premises or the public within, and this was merely a precaution until we could satisfy ourselves the area was safe.

"Officers will be in the area into the evening to provide further reassurance whilst continuing to investigate this incident."

STV reporter Craig Millar is at the scene.

He said: "There are police vehicles all over the place. The first thing people probably noticed was a police helicopter in the sky.

"Just off Earn Road, there’s a cul de sac and there are also a number of police vehicles at an address there, and there are armed officers among them.

"Then an army bomb disposal unit appeared at the scene with its sirens on. It was moving about the streets, it didn’t seem to know where to stop.

"Then it went towards Asda and came back again. Several police vehicle and officers are at the front door of the bank and there is some police presence at the back of the bank.

"Traffic has been stopped on Dunnikier Way and a police vehicle has also stopped all cars heading towards Asda."
