A business in Suffolk is thought to have fallen victim to the biggest phone scam ever to take place in the UK.
The company was conned into paying more than £1million to a fraudulent caller.
The conman told staff that the firm’s internet banking was the target of a virus. He managed to persuade them to transfer funds into a separate account while the bank worked to fix the issue.
The fraudster was granted remote access to the company’s software, which allowed him to transfer the huge cash sum from the firm’s account into other accounts, a Suffolk Police spokeswoman confirmed.
She added that staff at the company were ‘understandably distressed’ and alerted police after realising the money had disappeared.
Financial Fraud Action UK warns that phone scammer are often organised and highly professional so spotting a fake call can be difficult.
The FFA also revealed in June that telephone banking scams had earner fraudsters £23.6m in the last year.
Suffolk Police and Crime Commissioner Tim Passmore said that cyber fraud is perhaps the biggest threat to society.
