A German mother and daughter have been discovered living at Larnaca Airport in Cyprus for the past 15-months, living out a real life version of movie The Terminal.

According to Greek-language newspaper Phileleftheros, the two women are willingly living in the airport's car park.

The pair arrived on the island from Israel in August 2014 and instead of continuing back home to Germany, have stayed in the Mediterranean city.

The German Embassy, police and airport officials have reportedly offered to assist the pair to help them to return to Germany but their intervention has been refused.

The story is a real live version of Tom Hanks film The Terminal, in which he plays a man from Krakozhia who is stuck at JFK Airport as he is denied entry to the US but cannot return to his homeland due to a revolution.

The movie itself was inspired by the 18-year-stay of Karimi Nasseri, who lived in Charles de Gaulle International Airport form 1988 to 2006.

However, in this case, staff at the airport say the mother and daughter are refusing aid.

The Cyprus Weekly report that Adamos Aspris, Hermes Airports spokesman, said: 'The airport has offered to help the Germans on numerous occasions but they have refused any aid and seem somewhat unwilling to change their circumstances.'

Staff at Larnaca Airport claim the mother and daughter are seen regularly entering the airport to use the bathrooms.

Aspris states that the women arrived in Cyprus from Israel on August 12, 2014. They were deported from Israel because their visas had expired.

However, under European law there is no reason to expel EU citizens from a country if they have not committed a crime.

Cyprus isn't the only country to experience this phenomenon of hidden airport residents.
