Scientists claim to have found a way to develop weed without growing a plant.
It involves genetically engineering yeast to produce THC and cannabidiol – the main ingredients in marijuana.
Researchers at Dortmund University in Germany say they’ve come up with a special kind of yeast that contains the chemicals.
It means ‘farmers’ of the future won’t have to invest in growing plants.
Kevin Chen, the chief executive of Hyasynth Bio, the company at the forefront of cannabis-producing yeasts, told the New York Times recently: ‘This is something that could literally change the lives of millions of people.’
Synthetic versions of THC are available in pill form under brand names like Marinol and Cesamet.
These are used to treat problems associated with HIV and cancer chemotherapy.
