'Lonely' 95-year-olds Fred and Doris Thomson made a 999 call to police
PC Stu Ockwell answered and joined them for a cup of tea at their home
A 999 call from a despairing 95-year-old couple who were ‘lonely’ was answered – when an officer joined them for a cuppa.
Fred and Doris Thomson were delighted to host PC Stu Ockwell after their emergency call on Tuesday, making tea and telling him about life during the Second World War.
PC Ockwell said: ‘The lady’s husband has gone blind and she struggles to look after him. It was out of desperation, really.
He visited their home in Middleton, Greater Manchester after there were worries for the Thomsons following the 999 alert.

Officers from Greater Manchester Police tweeted: ‘What else could we do but make them a brew and have a chat.’
PC Ockwell added: ‘We’ve had some flak over it but they’re a 95-year-old couple. We attended over a concern for their welfare.’
Mr Thomson said he was thrilled that the beat bobby took time to chat. He said: ‘It’s a change to have somebody to talk to, somebody different. I was very pleased.’
