Football: Why Jose Mourinho was angry with Eva Carneiro and the rest of Chelsea's medical staff
It doesn't take a lot to make Jose Mourinho angry, from players not giving their all, to apparent campaigns by referees.
After yesterday's 2-2 draw with Swansea in the Premier League's opening day, the Chelsea boss decided to focus his ire not on referee Michael Oliver - who reduced the champions to ten men by sending off Thibaut Courtois and awarding a penalty - but the club's own medical staff.
Mourinho was incensed by first-team doctor Eva Carneiro running on to the pitch to treat Eden Hazard in the closing minutes of the game, but because a player receiving medical attention needs to leave the field for the next phase of play, Chelsea were effectively reduced to nine men at the end of the match.
Speaking to Sky Sports, Mourinho said:
I wasn't happy with my medical staff because you have to understand the game, even if you are a kit man, doctor or secretary on the bench, you have to understand the game. And you have to know you have one player less and when you go to the pitch to assist a player you must be sure that the player has a serious problem and I was sure that Eden didn't have a serious problem. He had a knock and was very, very tired. And my medical department, in impulse, naivety, they left me with eight outfield players in a counter attack after a set piece, and we were worried we were two players less.
