Ogun State: Why The Industrial Action Must Be Sustained By Labour - Wale Adenaiya, ASUSS PRO

It is very significant that the leadership of labour in Ogun state should not let the success of yesterday's workers' rally or protest march be lost on them. If on such a short space of time we could mobilize our colleagues from all the various MDAs that make up the workforce to attend the march in March on such large scale, then it is essential that the leaderships should ensure that...

1. They sustain, retain, and maintain the loyalty, support, comradeship and the spirit which I saw in those wonderful workers yesterday.

2. They, I mean the labour leaders, do not give their loyal and ever-dedicated colleagues any reason to doubt their leadership and commitment level. Any attempt to abruptly end the strike without any modicum of victory or success, feelings of betrayal and sell out will be established among workers.

3. The state government and her officials should be made to realize that no one jokes with the collective sensibilities and welfare of workers.

4. There is no REASON whatsoever to go back to the "NEGOTIATION TABLE" with representatives of government after all there is a subsisting MEMORANDUM OF UNDERSTANDING duly signed by all parties. So, why can't the government adhere to the agreements therein. Fraud is intended once the labour leaders accede or kowtow to any new NEGOTIATION.

5. Those workers who are currently attending to their duties at the government secretariat, no matter how few they might be, would see our struggle as a mere time wasting efforts and a WILD GOOSE CHASE if we back out of the strike action without achieving part or whole.

6. A wrong signal would have been sent to government, Civil society groups, the media, and members of the society that the labour Unions in Ogun state are mere toothless bulldogs that can only bark but CANNOT bite. And government will always bully us and go away with it unscathed.

It is therefore very expedient for labour leaderships to be firm, resolute, loyal to this struggle and NEVER to take unilateral decisions without subjecting such to congress or popular participation.

When this struggle is over, workers should be the last party standing, even though we believe in the WIN-WIN APPROACH to issues. Let the struggle continue till we can say: " TO GOD BE THE GLORY"
