Lovey-dovey husband-in-chief President Barack Obama has declared his devotion to the First Lady in a televised Valentine's Day message.

"Somebody call the Situation Room because things are about to get hot," he said on Friday's The Ellen DeGeneres Show.

Mr Obama was standing in front of a red curtain amid bouquets of flowers as romantic music played.

The President, who is spending another Valentine's Day apart from Michelle Obama, promised her a massage and some zucchini bread.

He said: "I love you so much, I Obamacare about you more than you even know."

Setting aside the humour, Mr Obama added: "Michelle, I've made a lot of great decisions as president.

"The best decision I ever made was choosing you.

"Thanks for putting up with me. I love you."

Mrs Obama surprised her husband earlier in the broadcast, which was recorded on Thursday, by popping up to recite a poem.

"Roses are red, violets are blue, you are the president and I am your boo," she said in the taped message.

Mr Obama also had some tongue-in-cheek advice for husbands on how to avoid marital conflict.

"After about 15 years, I finally figured out that she's always right," he said.

"So then surprisingly we just stopped fighting after that."

Mr Obama is expected to spend the lovers' holiday on Sunday in California playing golf ahead of next week's Asian nations summit.

He has also spent the previous two Valentine's Days in California, away from Mrs Obama.

On the DeGeneres show, the President spoke about how much he'll miss the couple's older daughter, Malia, when she leaves for university in the autumn.

"She's one of my best friends," he said. "It's going to be hard for me not to have her around all the time."
