More than 8,500 performers from 20 countries took part in the event, which was witnessed by 500,000 spectators.

Hundreds of thousands of people have lined the streets of central London to watch the annual New Year's Day parade

More than 8,500 performers from 20 countries took part in the event, including marching bands, cheerleaders, clowns and acrobats.

It kicked off in Piccadilly and snaked its way to Parliament Square, taking in Lower Regent Street, Pall Mall, Trafalgar Square and Whitehall along the way.

A spokesman for the Metropolitan Police confirmed only that "proportionate policing" had been in place for the parade.

The only snag in the event was when a novelty mermaid balloon caught on a building and popped, but it was quickly replaced with a unicorn.

London New Year's Day Parade spokesman Dan Kirkby said: "It has been amazing and we've seen about 500,000 people come along - the best turn-out we have ever seen.

"We started a little late and had a slight balloon mishap, but it didn't leave us too deflated.

"It has been a real party for everyone here and those watching from other countries.

"It gives us a chance to show the whole world what London has to offer."

Last night, huge crowds lined the banks of the River Thames to watch a spectacular fireworks display and usher in the start of 2016.

Around 3,000 police officers, including armed police, were deployed to watch over last night's event at a time of heightened global security in the aftermath of the Paris terror attacks.

Metropolitan Police spokeswoman Superintendent Jo Edwards said the extra officers were for reassurance and the event was successful.

She said: "Our officers worked alongside stewards to support their operation and help people to get in and out of the event area safely and efficiently."
