Security Alert: Boko Haram plans to attack South West with cluster bombs, National Orientation Agency warns

Cluster Bombs

The National Orientation Agency (NOA), on Thursday, said there were threats by Boko Haram insurgents to attack targets in the South West part of the country.

The NOA, which raised the alarm in a statement, on Thursday, said it had become necessary to give the warning in view of security reports at its disposal.

The agency said it had consequently written letters to schools, churches, mosques, among others, on the need to put up measures capable of nipping such planned attacks in the bud.

The Ekiti State office of NOA, in the statement signed by its state director, Mr. Dayo Famosaya, entitled: 'Public information on security consciousness and awareness,' said Boko Haram fighters might have infiltrated the South Western part of the country, going by the content of security agents' reports available to NOA in the state.

Famosaya said: “They have threatened to deploy cluster bombs in the zone, these cluster bombs are usually housed in discarded metallic materials such as can of beverages and soft drinks.

“The bombs may be concealed in bags, cellophane paper and for it to have more grievous effect, they have planned to deploy these bombs in crowded places such as schools, markets, stadia, churches and mosques," the agency said.

The statement warned members of the public to watch out for people wearing flowing apparel, as it is the type of cloth they wear so as to hide their weapons.

He said: “As a result of these security tips, we wish to call our religious leaders, principals of schools, officials of sports, associations and other relevant bodies to be security conscious.”

It was gathered in Ado Ekiti, the Ekiti State capital, on Thursday, that authorities of some religious institutions, including public and private schools, confirmed receipt of the letters from NOA and had begun putting measures in place to foil any possible attack.
