Man gives up sugar and alcohol for a month – no prizes for guessing what happened - Video

Not a happy man (Picture: lifehunterstv)

There are many health issues we can still have a spirited debate about.

Is coffee bad for you? Does the Atkins diet work?

However there is one thing we can all usually agree on – sugar and alcohol are bad for you (if you have too much of either).

One man wants to see the evidence for himself, which is why he gave up alcohol and sugar (including foods with added sugar) for one month, and documented the impact it had on his body.

Dutch film maker Sacha Harland set himself the challenge with his friend and colleague Boris – within a few days he was regretting it.

To begin with he is experiencing withdrawal symptoms similar to those felt by drug addicts – he feels angry, he desperately wants the one thing he has denied himself, and he claims to see his forbidden fruit (in this case, sugary drinks) everywhere.

At one point his friend even chows down on some popcorn and beer while Sacha has to suck it up and enjoy his delicious water.

However by the end of the month things have started to change.

His cravings for sweet foods have left him, and Sacha claims to have more energy and feel better.

His doctor agrees – she finds he has lost weight, improved his blood pressure and reduced his cholesterol.

Not that surprising really, but it’s still nice to join him for the ride.

And when the whole thing is over Sacha says he won’t be continuing the diet – just moving to a slightly healthier lifestyle.

So… completely worthwhile then?
