THE generally peaceful conduct of the March 28, 2015 Nigerian presidential election and the gracious acceptance of defeat by the incumbent President Goodluck Jonathan of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) strongly signaled that Nigeria may have turned a new page, politically. Other indicators of a new turn for Africa’s largest democratic country and economy are the following firsts in the country’s annals: the widespread innovative use of technology for the process—the use of card readers; the overthrow of the ruling PDP by the General Muhammadu Buhari-led All Progressives Congress (APC) through the ballot box after 16 years of dominance; the election of four none indigenes of a state (Lagos State) as members of the Federal House of Representatives; and the above-average performance of the National Electoral Commission in ways that suggest considerable independence of the electoral umpire.

Pro-Biafra protesters yesterday, carried their release- Nnamdi-Kanu protest to Umuahia, the Abia State capital and the home-town of Nnamdi Kanu, marching through the major streets of the city, but under the watch of security agencies.

A 35-year-old housewife, Azeez Yemisi, on Tuesday urged an Ado-Ekiti Customary Court to dissolve her 15-year-old marriage to her husband, Kehinde, for alleged desertion, lack of care for her and the children. Yemisi, a resident of No. 10, Odo-Ado, Ado-Ekiti, told the court that whenever had no money, it was their neighbour that always assisted to transport her children to school.

The President of the Senate, Sen. Bukola Saraki, has said that no amount of intimidation will stop the assembly from investigating the alleged N25 billion Treasury Single Account (TSA) fraud. Saraki was reacting to a motion moved by Sen. Dino Melaye (APC-Kogi West) on Tuesday over a newspaper article allegedly blackmailing the Senate for pointing out the alleged fraud.

The Inspector-General of Police, Mr Solomon Arase, said police were aware of plans by some politicians in Kogi to clothe thugs in police uniform during the governorship election in Kogi on Saturday. Arase, who made the disclosure on Tuesday in Lokoja, at a stakeholders’ forum, said that the intention of the perpetrators was to disrupt the election and cause mayhem.
He described the action of those behind the act as “wrong and wasteful investment “.
