Cabbie sent the Queen £50 for a special cup of tea- but she sent it back

What do you get the queen who has everything? A new lead for one of her Corgis? A new handbag? Or £50 for a (expensive) cup of tea?

That’s the present cabbie David Vaz sent to Her Royal Highness when she became the longest serving monarch last week.

Mr Vaz, 43, was delighted when one of the Queen’s ladies in waiting wrote back, though they had to return the £50 because the Queen is not allowed to accept cash gifts.

David, who works as a controller for A1 minicabs in Romford, said: ‘I see her as a second mum.

‘I went through a really rough time a few years ago and I wrote to the Queen and told her about my life.

‘I told her that at the time I was on benefits and trying to contribute by volunteering. She wrote back then as well and that really moved me.’

David, sent her the money so she could ‘treat herself to her favourite cup of tea’.

David's letter to the Queen
Dear Madam,

I understand that you are about to make history as the longest reigning Monarch ever.

Ever since I was a little boy you have been the reigning Queen of England. I am so pleased you have had such a long and successful reign and hope you will continue for many years to come.

Please accept this small gift in the hope you may treat yourself to your favourite cup of tea or something else that you like on this momentous occasion.

I have the honour to be, Madam, Your Majesty’s humble and obedient servant.

The Queen's response
Dear Mr Vaz,

The Queen wishes me to thank you for your message in advance of the forthcoming splendid milestone in Her Majesty’s reign.

Although unable to reply to you personally, The Queen was most touched by your gift of fifty pounds.

However as Her Majesty cannot accept presents of a financial nature I am returning the note to you with this letter and I am to tell you that you kind gesture is greatly appreciated.

The Queen has been deeply moved by the affection and support shown to her throughout her Majesty’s long reign and letters such as yours give The Queen much pleasure.

Thank you, once again, for writing as you did.

Yours sincerely, The Lady Elton, Lady-in-Waiting
