#SOTU: Donald Trump rules Twitter after Obama's State Of The Union Address

Donald Trump

Obama wasn’t the only person to get a boost from the speech. Real estate mogul Donald Trump was the 2016 presidential contender who gained the most Twitter followers during the speech. Trump tweeted criticism of the speech as it was going on and was the subject of implicit barbs from both Obama and South Carolina Gov. Nikki Haley, who delivered the Republican response to the president’s speech.

On Twitter, the environment and the economy were the most tweeted-about topics, following foreign affairs. Users on Google searched for healthcare more than any other issue during the speech.

The Islamic faith and Muslims were the second-most talked about topic on Facebook, and the president’s denunciation of anti-Muslim rhetoric was the most talked about moment on the platform overall. Other moments, such as his pledge to work to shut down the military prison at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, and his closing declaration that “the State of our Union is strong,” drew a lot of attention on Facebook.
