She’s one of the gutsiest young stars in the spotlight, but even Lena Dunham has her limits.
The creator and star of hit show Girls has admitted she’s stopped using Twitter completely after being subjected to an onslaught of horrendous abuse.
Lena, who has nearly 3 million followers, says she’s handed control of her account to her management team completely as it’s not a ‘safe space’ for her.
‘I tweet, but I do it through someone else,’ she admitted during a podcast session with Re/code.
‘I don’t even know my Twitter password, which may make me seem like I’m no longer a sort of genuine community user.
‘I really appreciate that anybody follows me at all, and so I didn’t want to cut off my relationship to it completely, but it really, truly wasn’t a safe space for me’.
The actress, who is dating guitarist Jack Antonoff (a member of the band Fun), says being constantly exposed to such negativity can create ‘cancerous stuff inside you’.
Lena had already admitted earlier this year that she’d deleted the Twitter app from her phone.

The 29-year-old still controls her Instagram account and believes it’s a ‘more positive community’, but was subjected to a particularly vicious verbal attack after posting a picture of herself wearing a sports bra and her boyfriend’s boxer shorts.
Lena wasn’t prepared for the reaction the seemingly non-offensive snap received and worries about the impact some of the comments could have on her fans.
‘I don’t want them seeing a picture of me in my boyfriend’s boxers and then be told I’m obese and anyone who looks like me is repulsive and I deserve to be dragged around and smacked,’ she added.

The star still receives a huge amount of abuse on her Instagram page every time she posts a picture, but says she prefers the service as it’s more immediate and she doesn’t read the comments any more.
‘I take a picture. I post it. I move on,’ she says.
