Kenya: Two Lady Thieves Almost Lynched By Angry Mob In Embu Town

The suspects

Two female thieves were mercilessly beaten by angry mob when they were caught trying to scam a shop owner of sh17,000 (about £100 or N52,000) by pretending to sell him sim cards. He raised alarm that attracted the bye-passers who swam on the women. This happened in Embu Town, 120 kilometres northeast of Nairobi towards Mount Kenya.

Save for the early arrival of police at the scene, the two ladies could have been killed by the mob that have torn their dresses and one of them was seen bleeding. The women, identified as Wincate Mukami and Faith Wangui. According to Ziro Arome, the Deputy Police boss for the area, "had been moving around town under the guise of selling SIM cards while tricking unsuspecting people."

Arome said the officers who rescued them salvaged the torn clothes with which they wrapped themselves. He urged members of public to stop engaging in mob justice and report the matters to police for prosecution.

The suspects are now being held at the Embu Police Station.
