Pub landlord murdered regular for taking too long to drink up

David Keane arriving at Manchester Crown Court

A pub landlord murdered a punter because he was taking too long to drink up at the end of the night.

David Keane, 43, beat up George Harris so badly at the Huntsman Inn in Rusholme, Manchester, that he suffered severe brain damage and died from his injuries two-and-a-half years later.

Keane threw the 33-year-old victim to the floor before stamping on his head so violently his trainers left an imprint. Afterwards, he stormed out of the pub shouting ‘I have had enough of this f***ing place’.

A CT scan later showed Harris had bleeding and swelling of his brain. For the next two-and-a-half years he suffered post-traumatic epilepsy and regularly had severe seizures, one of which was so bad he dislocated his shoulder.

His mother Lynn found him dead in his home on New Year’s Eve 2013.

‘Because of his head injury Mr Harris had very little recollection of what happened,’ Prosecutor Andrew Thomas QC told Manchester Crown Court.

‘The defendant punches Mr Harris to the face about three times and then pushes him the floor then goes to jump in the air as he stamps down on the side of Mr Harris’ head. He caused a lasting brain injury which ultimately two-and-a-half years later, caused death.

‘It is a case of murder just the same if the death had occurred straight away, or the next day or a week later.’

Michelle Carroll, a barmaid working that evening, was the only eye-witness who agreed to give a statement to the police.

‘I went outside to get pint pots from the smoking area and when I came back in George was on the floor face-up,’ she told the court. ‘David stamped on his head. George didn’t do anything. He was out cold when he stamped on his head.’

Keane will be sentenced at a later date.
